Why cant i get more out of my computer?

My computer can only run smoothly with no more than 6500 troops on screen. After than it gets choppy and lags. I have pretty good(i think performing computer) ATI Radeon express 1100 grafics, 1 gig of RAM Pentium 4 process, 3 GHZ processor speed. Does anyone know whats the problem?

Depending on what mod, if any, or what version of RTW you are running, for instance 1.5 has some graphical improvements that will tax a machine, 6500 troops isn't that bad.

The best thing to do is just optimize your PC. Cut down on running processes and windows services and clean up your machine. Also a good defrag utility would help a bit, I use Diskeeper.

I have a strictly gaming PC, as well as a notebook connected to the net. My gaming PC has only 13 running processes and I have disabled many windows services. I also have optimized my graphics card drivers with ATI tray tools.

Trying turning your graphic details to a minimum under your game options. That should help if you haven't done this already.

6,500 troops is a hell of a lot, in vanilla game terms. About three full stacks (on 'Huge' setting)... there would be cause for concern if you had trouble with significantly less than that, but I think it's just the limitation of the game.

You could always add more ram, or drastically cut down the visual settings.

man 6,500 is a crap load. i can only hold 2,400 not laggy. but do what barbarian prince said and that can let you hold up to 10,000 but it looks crappy.

i have heard of people getting 30,000 troops tho so aim high

i get about 10000 before it gets laggy (on open plain, siege is a bit less). I have a v good graphics card (8800gts 640mb so it is not that) also a lot of ram (2 gigs) and an ok processor (pentium D 3.4 ghz) so i am also annoyed i can't get more out of this game too...

The thing in this game is heavy on is Processing power so getting a new processor may help (wait a bit on the 22nd of july Intel have announced a price Drop YAY as AMD is releasing their new Dual core/ quad core range, well atleast thats what i read...)

If you do want to get alot of large battles i suggest you try SPQR mod (wat i am playing atm) and the battle sizes are a minimum of 4000 v 4000

I tried a battle with about 33,000 soldiers in the field at once. Rome crashed after 20 minutes of lag fest.

What if it was possible to really have hundreds of thousands of men fighting at once instead of thousands?

well with more men tactics become a nightmare as there is so much distance on the map to scroll around and so many men... but then again it would look really good

Umm, The game engine can only handle up to 10,000 men, how are you even getting 30,000 let alone past 6,000!

Getting rid of grass lets you get a lot more troops.

AFAIK, the game is programmed in such as way that no matter how good your specs are, you will have a hard time going over 10,000 men. If you have ever played M2TW with the same comp. as RTW, (assuming that your system could run RTW pretty well) you will notice that there is not in fact much difference in performance because, I think, M2TW is just programmed better, more efficiently.
