The Gold Edition has the latest patches for BI and RTW. So if you wanted to play online, all you need to do is make sure you've typed in your CD-Key in correctly, and that your Firewall doesn't deny you from connecting to GameSpy.

wait wait wait...you have to gain access firewall to gamespy, in order to be able to play RTW MP??? this mean gamespy needs to be installed or what???

Just to be sure, when you start your game, from the main menu go to Options. You will see your version number in the upper right hand corner. The latest is 1.5 for RTW and 1.6 for BI.

I have Gold and it came with RTW at 1.5. However, the version of BI it came with is only 1.4, and when I installed BI it also rolled back RTW to version 1.3. So I had to use the BI 1.6 patch to bring both up to the latest version levels. Weird huh?

Subrosa might be right about BI being outdated on the Gold Edition. But RTW definitely is pre-patched to 1.5

No, do not install GameSpy during installation! The only GameSpy software you'll need comes with the game already.

As for the Firewall, I had to disable mine in order to connect to GameSpy.

I think different versions of the game may have shipped in Gold, depending on when the copy you have rolled off the presses. I am sure the most recent ones they produced are all at the latest version levels. I probably just bought a copy that was sitting on the store shelf for a year (maybe that is why it was $10 cheaper than anywhere else I saw it).

It is indeed important to verify your version # after installing the gold edition.

Start the game and open the options menu, the VER number should be upper right.

My copy of gold edition installs RTW ver 1.5, but when I install the BI disk that comes with the gold edition, RTW is rolled back to 1.3, and I need to patch to 1.5, BI installs at 1.6.

I know it is really weird and poor QC on SEGA's end.
