Default Your Favorite Map (Rome: Total War Vanilla)

What's everyone's favorite map(s) to use for SP or MP Custom Battles? And why?

    MY FAVORITES
    I have 3 favorites:
    1) Grassy Flatland
    2) Syrian Flats
    3) Italian Lowlands

I like the Grassy Flatlands because it's flat which means no one has the advantage of higher ground. Being flat, it's also perfect for cavalry maneuvers. One more thing - my computer runs very smooth on this map due to its graphical simplicity.

I like the Syrian Flats for the same above reasons as the Grassy Flatlands. However, the desert terrain gives an extra advantage to some of the African units which makes the game more interesting. Also, I like this map because it resembles the Gaugamela battlefield in the movie, "Alexander."

The Italian Lowlands is nice too because it's fairly flat, but there's also tree cover to provide ambush zones for all of those players aspiring to become the next Hannibal Barca:

    (the Italian Lowland)

Here are the list of Single-Player and Multiplayer maps:
    - Macedonian Ruins
    - Ancrya
    - Rome
    - Cilician Hills
    - Grassy Flatland
    - Syrian Flats
    - Arretium
    - Illyrian Valley
    - Southwater
    - Londinium
    - Numidian Basin
    - Sarmatian Mound
    - Thracian Foothills
    - British Grassland
    - Gallic Countryside
    - Italian Lowland
    - Sahara Desert
    - Libyan Plains
    - Arabian Dunes
    - Germanic Forest
    - Nordic Woodland
    - Cappadocian Forest
    - Prippet Marshes
    - Sierra Nevada
    - Scottish Highland
    - Armenian Mountains
    - Pontic Peaks
    - Alpine Valley
    - Tuscan Bay
    - Greek Shore
    - African Coast
    - Moon River
    - River Jordan
    - Nile Bridge

(I didn't mention any of the Historical maps but you can if you want)

EDIT: I meant to add a poll to this, but it's too late to go back.

My faviourate is probibly grassy flatland because it 100% equal, i also like greek shore because you can suprise your enemy with some great ambushes. ][Xyphos][ - pets last tourney was held on this map i thourgh it was a great choice and really enjoyed the tourney the only downside was that there was a slight down hill advantage to whoever hosted the game.

I like southwater alot, especially in team games, the buildings in the middle make great flank protection on both sides and the forests for ambushes.

I also like Greek shore again, good for ambushes, though it is biased depending on which team though.

I also like ancyra, the city isnt to big but no so small who meet the walls always and the walls are the perfect ones.

Macedonian Ruins - flat land can be a little boring, surely you want decent terrain that you can get a little creative with?

Plus, it has Greek architectural pieces, which I always enjoy playing around.

Everyone has different tastes as you can see. And everyone has their own opinions on what constitutes "decent" terrain.

If you're creative, than you can get creative with any map.

    P.S
Macedonian Ruins, ironically enough, doesn't favor Macedon or any other faction that relies on phalanx troops. But that's fine if you prefer that kind of map.

Hah, yeh, that had occured to me about the Phalanx armies, having to operate in a place like that.

Well, I just think fighting on featureless maps cuts down on your range of options, you're eliminating alot of normal military strategy. No higher ground, no cover, no ambush - it just does sound terribly boring to me.

PS: I like Ponitc Peaks, as well.

    Hi

I play campaign mode mostly. Maps are varied but a good one would be fairly typical...hills..and a copse or two of trees. Ones I really like have unusual buildings in them...a cosmetic thing.

Dislike the heavily forrested maps. Too hard to see whats going on. Plus trees get in the way of missiles.

In multiplay my most played map was Macedon ruins...using Macedon. Played many co-operative battles with other players against far stronger AI armies. We stuck our phalanx troops on the slope of the steep hill and let the AI come to us. We won most of the time...not all of the time.

but the idea of the flat, featureless maps is to allow equal tactics rather than hill camping tactics also ambushes are so obvious (online i have only once been hit by a good ambush and that was oe of my first ever games) but i do like maps which are flat and have equal cover but the flat ones are best (i have my ownflat map called "TubbZ Cake Shop" its got nice scenery and a few trees but nothing too disadvantaging

I agree with Severous regarding those maps where trees are everywhere. Me and my friend played on one of those (probably Germanic Forest), and I was so dizzy after that game from trying to keep track of all of my units. It's certainly a unique experience though!

TubbZ' Cake Shop? Do the Egyptians roll out in their chariots and serve you birthday cakes or something?

    Grassy Flatland
    Germanic Forest
    Syrian Flats
Scottish Highland - it's an open scenario that still leaves room for some tactics, and also has an interesting visual aspect contrary to plain grass.
"Romans not only easily conquered those who fought by cutting, but mocked them too. For the cut, even delivered with force, frequently does not kill, when the vital parts are protected by equipment and bone. On the contrary, a point brought to bear is fatal at two inches; for it is necessary that whatever vital parts it penetrates, it is immersed. Next, when a cut is delivered, the right arm and flank are exposed. However, the point is delivered with the cover of the body and wounds the enemy before he sees it."
