    Default Culture penalty question

    Hi all,

First of all, I would like to say thanks to all those who put their effort into developing this mod. For a long time, I have felt very uncomfortable with the shortcomings of the original RTW's, to see someone take the effort and incorporate so many new elements...its makes me all warm and fuzzy -)

I just had a question regarding cultural penalty in the game. It seems like no matter what I do, I always suffer a cultural penalty in the cities that I conquer. I have destroyed all foreign buildings, I have made sure of this. The only thing left is the town square building, which I believe is used to bypass the revolt CTD problem. Could this contribute to cultural penalty, especially since a majority of mine arent roman cultured?

Another thing I've noticed is that only select cities are allowed to go huge. For example, in my game, when Carthago hits 24k, I am not given the option to build a palace. Given this limitation, does that mean I am totally screwed for cultural penalty for large cities? Since when I conquer them, they are already large, and I have no way of demolishing said structure, nor can I build up.

I have searched through other threads and faqs quite a bit, it doesn't seem like anyone has brought this up, is this just a problem I am seeing then?

    Thanks

Check the building browser when your city is ready to go huge. You need the second to largest market also.

I think culture penalty is to do with what culture predominates within a region, so Attica will be Greek, Latinium will be Roman/Italic and Susa will be Persian/Eastern. This also affects what local troops you can recruit.

I've had a number of CTD problems, sometime with revolt, and sometimes not, and have had many different solutions. Sometimes just moving the location of some of my armies, or giving a portion of my treasury to another faction fixes the problem. Sometimes I'll bribe enemy diplomats...

There just doesn't seem to be any rhyme or reason to it all.

I do not think so, as the buildings that Florin and I dessigned belong to the slave faction so they should be neutral.

hmm...should I try to post a copy of my save game here then? Because a couple of my cities, there is nothing foreign left, except for the town square, which is designated (Greek), and I have a 20% cultural penalty, and I just cannot figure out what it's from. Any suggestions? Or should I look a little harder? I am experiencing this with a couple of provinces, gaulic, greek, and carthegian.

Sorry, as my rushed reply appears to have added more confusion to this issue. The culture penalty is determined by the faction assigned as "aligned" to the settlement in the file descr_regions.txt. So, no matter what you do, there is always going to be some "estructural" culture penalty for every settlement unless it is ruled by the faction it is alleged to in descr_regions. Of course, the existance of other factions' buildings is going to increase the culture penalty so destroying them is a good option.

thanx for the explanation Salvor, I can now return to the game at peace. While on this culture penalty topic, is there a reason why none of the mods i've seen allows us to modify existing government structures? Ie the palace, governor's chambers and such. It doesn't make a lot of sense to me that once it is built, that particular building cannot be torn down or "modified" to your faction's liking.

Or is this something just hardcoded into the game and cannot be changed?

If only CA had allowed the core building to be modified, so many things could be different. But alas, messing with them causes...well, instant CTD's most of the time.

Well slave faction by default (in vanilla) uses Roman culture. Haven't really played non-roman faction (either vanilla or RTR) I can't say if the effect is neutral to non-roman factions.
