You can find the bat.file and the cfg.file in Machiavello 2.1 (search it in downloads section). I think they are the same in Machiavello 4.0.

However, for the cfg file, I suggest you to create your own : just copy the "features" and "log" lines of machiavello's cfg (5 lines in all) in an fresh copy of Medieval2.preference, rename it machiavello and overwrite the original machiavello.cfg. To do this, you've got your own preference in the game all the time and yours modifications will be saved too.

    Sorry for my bad english.

I downloaded v4.0 but when I unpacked the RAR file it was full of errors. Was it just a bad download?

    Mhmm, maybe...

Note that the file is a 7zip, not a simple RAR, you have to unpack it with 7zip or a recent version of WinRAR.

I posted in another thread (wrong thread):

I'm also getting 'unspecified error', but not when I try to run it. I can launch it and start a game, but about 10 or 15 or so turns into the game, I start getting the error. The only pattern is that it always occurs while the AI controlled factions are doing their thing. I can relaunch and reload from autosave, then may be able to play 2 or 3 more turns, and it happens again. I've been playing other mods, and so far, this is the only mod I have this problem. Too bad... This looks like an awesome mod.
    izanagi11 responded:

Cueshot, did you copy in the data directory from "Machiavello - Total War" into the "Machiavello"?
Now my response, in the this thread (correct thread):

I copied the "data" folder, which contains only the banner textures and was immediately in the "Machiavello - Total War" folder, to the main install directory of M2TW. Since it was outside of the "Machiavello" folder, I figured that was the intent. Then I copied the "Machiavello" folder to the main M2TW install directory. Is it supposed to be in the "Machiavello" folder instead?

    you made it fine.

Remember you need the 1.2 patch of M2TW. Try to install Machiavello possibly without other mods.

Tell me more about your ctd: is it in a certain year? If you start a new campaign, it crashes again? when you reload the saved file?

    Bye

Hi, I wonder, have you changed the start date? If you did, how many turns will a campaign have?

I definitely have the 1.2 patch installed.

At the time this was happening, I had only 2 other mods installed plus another mod I've been designing myself. Not one of those mods add or change anything in the data folder of the main M2TW install directory. They each house everything in its own folder (with the exception of its corresponding cfg file in the main M2TW install directory).

It's not in a certain year. When it first happened, I relaunched and reloaded the game from autosave. At this point, of course, the state of the campaign map is exactly the way it was before ending my turn just prior to the error. I ended my turn again at this point to see if it would happen again at the same time. It didn't. The AI made different decisions this time and the error did not occur. Then about 2 or 3 turns later, it occurred again. I seem to remember it was even a different faction that was "thinking" each time. It was, however, both times at a point when an agent was either moving or reached the end of its journey, I can't remember which for sure. The first time was a Hungarian (I think) merchant and the second time an Imperial Priest.

    Ok,
so it isn't a compatibility problem.
I will make some control on priests and merchants. In the meantime, you can start a new campaign and tell me if the same problem occurs again.
