Default Game crashes after kicking in my own countrymen..

I haven't had M2 for long, so I haven't really got far in the campaign.

Basically this is the only incident that its occurred to me.

I will, as English, be besieging the Scottish city of Edinburgh (I live in Aberdeen so its cool anyhow :] )

I will click assault, then auto-resolve the battle, I'll win, click occupy settlement, and then the screen will go blank with just the game pointer on, my computer will make the error message noise, but I can;t see any message, and stay blank for a while. Usually I manually restart my computer at this point but it happened just 5 minutes ago, I waited (albeit feeling quite annoyed) and then pressed my enter key, the screen came up with the desktop, but no error message, and no minimized M2 tab.

This has happened with the clean install and with the 1.2 patch I downloaded last night.

I dunno if its supposed to go to a cut-scene or something for finishing off a faction, but my computer has no problem with the other cut scenes I've viewed.

As I said I haven't really tested it on finishing off another faction because I have only played the Spanish one a short way in, getting the feel for M2, and the English campaign, with any real intention of trying.

Any help would be great, I dunno if its a problem which has occurred before, but its fairly game-breaking as it stands, since if I can't finish anyone off its going to make the game interesting to say the least.

It hasn't done it when I've taken other cities, and aside from this, my game runs fine, it doesn't run the graphics at the top end, but then, not many folks machines do.

Any feedback would be great, I have all the TW games, missing the odd expansion though, and would love to get back into a TW game, I really need my fix of dominating the known world.

Are you using any no-cd cracks.

Right, I changed the cutscene event line in that preferences.cfg? folder, and tried again, it still crashes. This time I managed to see the error message.

It basically says "Medieval 2 has encountered an unspecified error and will now close".

This is really annoying me now, I don't wanna start getting pissed off and saying not nice things about the developers of this game but its really not big and really not clever that this crud is going on.

My direct x is fine, the game works fine for everything else so far but this one stupid problem.

Any help would be fine, I don't have any mods, no CD cracks, or anything but the clean install plus the 2.1 patch. I haven't fiddled with any of the files except to change the event cutscene line to 0.

This problem has persisted from clean install through the patch to turning cutscenes off.

I got the intro if thats any help but I dunno if that counts in the cut-scenes or not, I read that the .cfg thing is in another location as well but TBH I couldn't find the folder its located in, so I assumed it was a Vista thing.

    Thanks for your time.

    It should be in either /users/[you]/appdata/virtualstore/program files/SEGA/Medieval 2: Total War/ or /users/[you]/appdata/program files/...

Had the exact same problem... using England couldn't eliminate a faction as my system would crash.

Hunted through the forums, found nothing to solve the issues.

I'm using Windows XP, I typically play the game as a GUEST - it's a much faster profile on my system that needs a good weekend of maintenance.

However, when I switched to my usual account; the above crashing issues disappeared! Not too sure why or how, but I hope this helps someone.

Seems to be related to restricted user privileges, then.

    I'll keep that in mind

You need full control over the M2TW folder to run the game as thats where the saved games are stored. Either login as an admin or give full control of the folder to your other account.

    hmm.

Not sure if it's possible to give control of folders over to guest on XP - definitely not a good idea regardless.

I'd suggest making a new local admin account and just running the game on that.

Actually you can give Guest full control over anything, theres no difference between the Guest account and any other account you create as far as the operating system is concerned. They just made the Guest account and gave it limited permissions to make it easier for people to set up their machine.

I agree its not a good idea to give Guest full rights over anything, in fact the best thing to do with Guest is disable it since every hacker in the world knows the Guest account exists. Thats why I said his OTHER accounts and didnt name Guest specifically.
