    Default empty provinces

    Hi all,

Finally started to play Rome Gold edition a year after buying it; 2 questions.

    1) The manual refers to a tech-tree chart- I don't have one, is this a manual error? (UK version)

    2) Whilst fighting the Gauls I cast my eye over to the nearest settlement they owned for my next conquest and now it's gone!!
Why has it gone? where has it gone to?! Can I build a new one?

    Help me pleeeeaaassseeee..........

    1) Yeah, I doubt the tech paper is included in the Gold edition then, so you'll have to manage without it. You can always see the building browser in-game.

    2) Settlements don't disappear, so it must have been a camp. It's a temporary fortification that can be built by generals, outside your settlements. They disappear when not being used.

There is an in-game tech tree, when you select a town, a screen should pop-up with the construction, recruitment etc options. However if you look to the bottom left corner of that pop up their is either 3 or 4 icons pending on the faction your playing as the top one 'building browser' click on this and you will be give an ingame tech tree.

    Thanks for the replies

I guess the "settlement" was a fort, which means the capital province of the Gauls is huge- stretching right down to the Pyrenees?!

I hadn't noticed that other button regarding the tech tree, cheers.

One final thing, is it worth destroying and replacing barbarian buildings with Roman ones or should I live and let live?

I have RTW Gold as well, and it did not come with a tech tree either. Or a fold out map that I have seen some people refer to (though I did snag a copy of the latter online somewhere).

It can often be worth it to tear down buildings belonging to other cultures. For starters you receive cash for it (I think the same amount it costs to build it, but I am not sure). But more importantly, every building in a settlement that belongs to a different culture adds 5% to the unrest in the settlement (up to a maximum of 50% total unrest).

You can eliminate that by either tearing down the buildings, or if you leave it intact when you upgrade it to the next tech level it will put one of your own culture buildings over it. So if you captured a settlement with a barbarian port, and you built a shipwright over that, it would be a Roman Shipwright.

Whether to tear down or hang on to buildings of differing cultures is a matter of your own economic and social strategy. Sometimes you might need those buildings (like barracks or armories in a border settlement). It is generally a good idea to tear down enemy temples as soon as you take a city however, and immediately start building one of your own (Law temples are good for the extra public order bonus). There are also a few buildings like farms cannot be torn down at all.

    Hi subrosa,

Thanks for that- I've been hanging on to a barbarian shrine in a town (along with numerous other normal buildings elsewhere) simply as it gave a +2 experience bonus!

Do the other gods 'throw a wobbly' if you concentrate on building only shrines to one god?

    Anyone:

One annoying aspect I've noticed is in wooded combat some trees seem to be about 500ft tall which makes it impossible to set up troops or fight in them. And if the enemy are up a hill I can't see them clearly or at all- I can't see anything in the manual allowing either a large zoom or a camera tilt (for viewing up a hill). Have I missed something?

Another thing- I can see spies walking into my settlements but can't do anything about them (I have a spy in each).

Finally, Does anyone know what the order bonus is from garrison troops? Ie; is it perhaps 5% per each 50 troops or something?

    Thanks all,

    Toby

You can zoom in and out with the camera, I find that zooming in tight down to ground level is the only way to fight in the woods, otherwise you cannot see anything at all. One reason I do not like fighting in dense woods. I am not sure what the default key mapping is for the zoom, I have it set to use my mouse-wheel to zoom in and out.

You can tilt the camera, am not sure what the default key mapping is for that either, but if you go to key setup you can find it.

Put spies of your own in the cities and there is a greater chance that the enemy spies will be automatically caught and killed. Build assassins and use them to kill the spies that escape. In my XGM Greek campaign I spent over twenty years fighting a Cold War with Thrace using spies and assassins this way.

I forget exactly what it is. However, I can say that the garrison bonus is based entirely on the numbers of the troops, and does not take the unit type or experience into account at all. Because of that Peasants make the best garrison troops, as they are the largest in size and cheapest in cost.

A neat little trick I found is that when you add a unit to the build queue it automatically subtracts their numbers from the city population. So if you fill the queue with peasants, it will knock down the city by a over a thousand people (assuming you are playing on huge), and you will see the public order increase because of it. Do this once you conquer a city or otherwise have a lot of unrest, and when the initial unrest dies down and just remove the peasants you do not want from the build queue. You will see them returned to your population, and you will get the money back that it would have cost to build them.

YEah about them trees its really annoying, try using the mouse wheel button to zoom in on them and derestrict camera is also useful.

and about the gods, no relgion isn't a major aspect of RTW but in BI it is with two different types of religion, Christanity and Paganism. Which involves putting the right faith generals in the right towns or converting all towns to one religion and going suicidal on the 'wrong religion' generals. Or alteast i had to do this with WRE

The Gaulish capital is Alesia - in the Central Gaul province. It don't stretch down to the mountains! You should be able to follow the roads (if they've built them) to the city.
