I am playing as the Greek Cities of RTW vanilla. I have wiped out macedonia, thrace, the house of Brutii, the house of Scipii, the SPQR and i'm attacking the house of Julii. So i have 2 full stacks moving up the italien peninsula, and 2 in the north of Italy. I recently captured Patavium, however the public order was so bad i decided to leave the city, so that i could march in again and exterminate those pesky peasants this time. However, as soon as i leave, i get attacked by a full stack of romans (pre marian), where ALL units are 2 gold chevroned.
Anyway, i'm thinking no biggy, my vast hoplite army (all 2 silver chevrons) will slash and hack at the romans like normal. I deploy my phalanx line right in front of the enemy, with cavalry either side to cover the flanks, and my general behind to make sure no one runs. They don't manage to outflank me or anything. After about 25 minutes of mind boggling blood shed in which i loose a good 80% of my army against a damn troop of Hastati and peasants, i win through.
I was wondering how on earth they managed to do this. I've been campaigning with my stacks, and they are all 2 silver chevroned, and somehow he comes out of the blue with a highly experienced army, despite the fact that i have already cut through about 8 full stacks of bronze chevroned units. Any ideas?
