Default Million year old Human Tooth discovered; could we be wrong about the origins of Man?

Spanish researchers on Friday said they had unearthed a human tooth more than one million years old, which they estimated to be the oldest human fossil remain ever discovered in western Europe.

Jose Maria Bermudez de Castro, co-director of research at the Atapuerca site said the molar, discovered on Wednesday in the Atapuerca Sierra in the northern province of Burgos, could be as much as 1.2 million years old.

"The tooth represents the oldest human fossil remain of western Europe. Now we finally have the anatomical evidence of the hominids that fabricated tools more than one million years ago," the Atapuerca Foundation said in a statement.

the thread is a bit misleading. Reading the article points out that they don't know which homo species this belongs to and I highly doubt it belongs to homo sapiens as the thread topic suggests. Although it would be interesting to discover a bit more about migration patterns for early homo species.

By human they're meaning a homonid, a member of the homo genus, not homo sapien sapien. They're taking a bit of a liberty with the word human.

If true, this discovery could be important in refining just when and how hominidae migrated into europe though.

You're right, still, the topic title is a bit misleading, especially the "could we be wrong about the origins" part. Since it's not about the origins, but about migration patterns, about which we could be wrong...

    Anyway, sounds interesting.
