Default FACTION: The Kingdom of Makuria

    Makuria

    Historical research - Ahiga
    Units - AD

    Background Information (from wikipedia)

Makuria (Arabic: مقرة; al-Mukurra or al-Muqurra) was a kingdom located in what is today Northern Sudan and Southern Egypt. It was one of a group of Nubian kingdoms that emerged in the centuries after the fall of the Kushite Kingdom, which had dominated the region from approximately 800 BC to AD 350. Makuria originally covered the area along the Nile River from the Third Cataract to somewhere between the Fifth and Sixth Cataracts. It also had control over the trade routes, mines, and oases to the east and west. Its capital was Dongola (or Dunqulah), and the kingdom is sometimes known by the name of its capital.

By the end of the 6th century it had converted to Christianity, but in the 7th century Egypt was conquered by the Islamic armies, and Nubia was cut off from the rest of Christendom. In 651 an Arab army invaded, but it was repulsed and a treaty known as the baqt was signed creating a relative peace between the two sides that lasted until the 13th century. Makuria expanded, annexing its northern neighbour Nobatia either at the time of the Arab invasion or during the reign of King Merkurios. The period from roughly 750 to 1150 saw the kingdom stable and prosperous, in what has been called the "Golden Age".[1] Increased aggression from Egypt, and internal discord led to the state's collapse in the 14th century.

    Faction strengths and weaknesses

Strengths: High attack value light infantry. Highly disciplined spearmen. Excellent longbowmen. Good heavy cavalry. Hybrid javelimen/swordsmen at tier 2 and hybid longbowmen/swordsmen tier 3.

Weaknesses: Wide spread lack of mail or lamellar armour until tier 4. No mounted archery. Impetious low tier units. Low tier units have low quality shields, which combined with a lack of armour make them vunerable. The hybrid units are poorly armoured.

Badass, simply badass. The lutat macemen are just...just *drool*, those makurian longbowmen look delightfully viscous, the emperor's guard and camel chargers.....wow. I am now torn as to my first faction.

Really enjoy the new Tier 4 Bejas. They look so much like armored nomads, all the more impressive given the fact that all you had to go on was the notion of them, not any sort of art.

To clear up the confusion brought on in the previous topic: As is clear by this topic, Makuria (The key Kingdom of Christian Nubia) is the faction that is being done. However, like the Kypchaks we are also featuring the presence of their neighbors in their ranks - the beja (Who would become Muslim in the 1200s), or the Ethiopians (The Shotel, the use of a two handed sword, the Lutat).

I'm speechless, this is like a dream faction. The skins..just.. *drool*, like pope said. I had no idea an African faction could have so much flavor. Once again great faction idea and research to Ahiga for the unit ideas and amazing skins to AD.

    Wa wa wee wa.

Everything is so great, the shields, the warpaint. The Beja Tribal Warriors look like they could kill somebody with their shield.

The Lutat Macemen are just plain badass. Everything is top notch, I'm totally playing these guys first thats for damn sure.

Not to mention camels, I love em. They're a nice change from horses.

EDIT - Oh and those bushy little hats, so awesome!

You can switch factions in hotseat mode?

And isn't hotseat mode only enabled in the expansion?

It's always been confusing as heck for me to understand what Hot seating was, or how it worked, but hypothetically if you could switch factions, that might mean unplayable ones become playable?

If it works how I think it does, you can play a multiplayer campaign on one computer, with one player pressing end turn and the next players turn coming up, similar to heroes of might and magic. But that's only if it works how I think it does:hmmm:

Yet another faction to play when BC is released! The words "spoiled for choice" have never been more aptly used!

Oh so they are Nubians! I was sorta right.

This is going to be a fun faction to play. I wonder, will they get their own portraits for family members or not?(And on that note, how about princesses?)
