Default Quad-Core? in 23rd of July (discounts?)

Hmmrph, I decided to postpone the horrid event of buying that computer, since it's never a good time to buy a computer.

I searched from somewhere, that prices would indeed have a notable drop, maybe about 50% in this one intel quad core processor. This wasn't the extreme one, it was the one-level-behind-that processor. Extreme quad would also be reduced about 20%ish from the original price. To $999 or soemthing.

So, what I was after, is that should I buy a quad core processor, instead of a cheaper core 2 duo (I was originally after an E6600-6700).

If I should, then I take it so that the extreme one, with over 200 dollars more price, isn't actually the cost effective one of the two top quad cores?

I mean, i'm probably gonna go crazy in the end of July: I'll start with getting Supreme Commander, Company of Heroes, Faces of War etc...

(After spending some 3 weeks in Germany on a language course, probably with reduced computer usage that is)

    EDIT:YAy I just turned 17 today (2nd of July)

    What supports quad core?

Its not a question but more of a statement.

I think supreme commander does, as does crysis.

i highly doubt they support quad core, practically no games use duel core yet.

I would save the money and go for a C2D. Make sure you get a motherboard that can support quad though in case you decide to upgrade. It looks like this is for gaming so I really don't think quad will help you all that much. Spend it on a top of the line graphics card/power supply instead, unless you had that planned already.

You’d be surprised at the amount of games that have multithreading capabilities.

The whole agreement about ‘don’t get quad core because virtually no games use dual cores yet’ is bogus.

Alan Wake will support quad core, look in youtube.com. Wait a bit and go for quad core.

I will be buying a new computer in August (early-middle).

My budget will ~2700€, but of course I won't have to spend all.

Now, should I just go for the E6600, or should I get future-proofy, and get a Q6600?

Come August time Intel will have released its new rage of quad cores (code name Peryn sp?), these will be purposed built quad cores which unlike current quad cores are just two Conroes on one die (buts that not to say they are bad). They will also be built on 45nm technology which means they should be relatively cool and shouldn’t consume a lot of power.

So I should go for that new (and unstable! ) technology?

EDIT: I wonder what they will cost... Currently at my "local store" (www.verkkokauppa.com), a Q6600 is at ~550€, while a E6600 is ~250€. What will the new Penryn's cost, as I won't pay more than 600€ for a Quad!? (And it must equal the performance of a 6600!)

I would wait until the reviews start to come out but I'm a firm believer in cycles and trends, and at the movement Intel is in an upwards trend and I see know reason why these new processors would bomb.

But will they be cheap enough in say, mid August? Because I really don't want to wait any longer than after school continues before buying a new computer, I've waited for 2 ****ing years!

Well try to think about it like this, if the new processors are out they would have had a knock on effect on the price of the older Core 2 chips, so even if the new ones are out of your price range (i'm sure there will be one that you can afford there will at least 4 or 5 in the new lineup there always is) you should be able to get a decent Core 2 quad for next to nothing, but going by your budget you shouldn't have a problem.

Well, according to intel's own announcements, I don't have the links at hand ATM, but a quick browse through peliplaneetta, would give you the exact news.

Well, anyways, the Q6600, which costs around the 500 bucks/euros whateva,
that model gets 50% discount on around 23rd of July. I guess it'll be less than 250 euros in Finland. Surely it's better than some loousy E6600.

Then again I'd like to get more info on those new Intels... any links?

****! It's just so true, it is NEVER a good time to buy a computer...

Damn that Intel and their über expensive 1200 euros quad core processors, ****, maybe I should order one from Germany where they are cheaper anyways...

If AMD could somehow pull their company together and start making some über processors, we'd see some competition. (and more discounts)
Somehow thats unlikely though, the company is more or less bankrupt or something by now. ********s of losses during this year.

So you're saying go for the new one?

OK. Will get back here at the end of July with a thread. Hopefully the new ones are out by then (or soon thereafter), ackording to Wikipedia (Core 2-articly, apparently the new ones are also Core 2...), they will only be out in late 07/early 08.

If the only benefit in the new ones in released in Q3 this year, is that you can burn some **** music on CDs faster, than I'd rather have the old one, but months sooner... And probably a lot cheaper.

WHAT I was really after in this thread would be wether the Extreme Quad QX6700 which costs about 1000 euros (originally $1200, but after discounts...)on July 23rd, would be a better choice, than the Q6600?

From quick glances here and there, the only obvious difference is the clock speeds, the former has a little less than the latter, which obviously doesn't make much of a difference, right?

Do you think the new set of quads which come in the last months of 2007, will bring anything worthwhile of waiting, to the table? I mean, you can still overclock that Q6600, if only the clock speeds are gonna go up, while also the price prob goes up as well, by 500 ****ing euros...

I have an AMD dual core, but hardly anyone actually helps me out with my superiority.
Sure I've been called a xenophobe, but the truth is Im not. I honestly feel that America is the best country and all other countries aren't as good. That used to be called patriotism.

"While AMD AM2+ processors are due out in Q3, Intel announced another plan on price reduction just 3 months after the previous drop on April 22. With a remarkable cut at 50%, AMD is facing another harsh battle with Intel.

As reported before, Intel has had hinted a price drop in Q3, expecting a second price drop someday in August and September. However, the exact date turns out surprisingly on July 22 as the first hand information we have received. Undoubtedly, the move give certain impact on the sales of AMD processors. Not until the release of next-generation AM2+ processors, it’s hard for AMD to get profit from their existing products.

In the most updated plan, Intel Quad-Core Core 2 Quad Q6600 (2.4GHz/4MB L2 x2/1066MHzFSB) will be further cut to $266, a second drop within 4 months since its release on March with 68.7% accumulated price drop. For the original price segment of Core 2 Quad Q6600, now it will be replaced by a new model Quad Q6700 (2.66GHz/4MB L2 x2/1066MHzFSB), pricing at $530.

For the mainstream desktop processors, while Core 2 Duo E6000 family has no price update information at this moment, its relatives, Core 2 Duo 6050 family which features 1333MHz FSB releasing on July 22, has got a very impressive price advantage. The 3 models including E6550 (2.33GHz), E6750 (2.66GHz), and E6850 (3GHz) are only priced at $266, $183, and $163, around 40% cheaper than its 1066MHz version. Together with the new release of Bearlake featuring 1333MHz FSB, the both releases are expected to have great sales.

For the Value segment, Core 2 Duo E4500 will be a new release on July 22. Featuring 2.2GHz clock speed, 2MB L2 Cache and 800MHz FSB, its price is set at $133, while E4400 will further drop to $113."

I thought the price cuts were due to the pending launch of Wolfdale and Penryn, the successor to Conroe and Menron respectively?
