    Icon5 Protectorates?

What exactly are protectorates and what happens when you become one? I think that it is either creating vassal kingdoms or surrendering.

Protectorates are like what you said, Vassals. It is just another word for them. Also, if you have a Protectorate, they sometimes give you money, and are Allied to your faction. If you are the Protectorate, you are Allied, but I think also forced to give them some tribute (money).

    I hope that helps!

i dont think you can offer to be a protectorate and the enemy usually only accepts when you offer them alot of money in return for them becoming a protectorate or if they are on their last province. i dont think protectorates are that important because although they give you a tribute it is nothing compared to what you can make capturing and building up their cities. so in my opinion you should just conquer their whole country unless your feeling merciful

Protectorates are factions that have surrendered to the opposing power. They will give you money each turn, and they won't attack you. But you can attack them and make whatever you want with them. They are like one of your cities, but you can't recruit any units from them or say to them how they shall control their armies.

You also get military access, meaning you can march your armies through their provinces without provoking them.

Once you have a protectorate faction do they still attack you? i meen like having an alliance on rome tw, most of the time when your allied with another neibouring faction, they almost everytime break there alliance straight away, does this happen when your someones protectorate? (sorry if this sounds confusing i couldnt think of a simpler way of putting it lol).

My allies don't attack me very often at all. In fact, they will cancel their alliances with their allies if one of them attacks me. Sometimes they give me gifts!

Still I am very careful about who I choose to make my alliances with, usually only 1 or *maybe* 2 factions. The trick is to pay them tribute. Early game if I make an alliance I will offer 100-250 denari/turn for 20-40 turns to the ally as a gift (250 works better it seems). When I can afford it, I wait for the current tribute treaty to expire (*note 1), then offer a new 40 turn tribute treaty paying 1000 to 1500/turn.

This may sound like a lot, but then it's the same as upkeep for what? 5 Legionary Cohorts? It actually saves money in the long run by not having to garrison your cities on their border so heavily. This is especially true if you share a good sized frontier with them.

*note 1* If you cancel a tribute treaty even just so you can start up a new more lucrative one, your ally will not like you anymore. So don't cancel treaties, just be careful which ones you accept and propose.

*note 2* As to protectorates, I have never had one....
