    Icon1 formation problem

    good evening guys,

i wanted to submit a problem with the marius formations.

i use the house rule legion, the problem is that in the earlier versions all the legionnaries used to be in the front and all spearmen auxillia to the back with the general but in this version they are placed to the left in every battle and this makes it annoying to change formations everytime before battle.

can somebody help me fix it?

    thanks.

yeah i mentioned this once, but there's no way to get around it, you just have to reorganize the formations by hand (which will make the battles even longer since it means you're sitting there for about 5 minutes (sometimes more) clicking and dragging units all over the place before you can even start fighting)

rep me if you like my posts, and it's highly likely you'll get some back

but why was it changed because we never had this problem in the prevoius versions.

Hello Pullo, I modified the marian formation so that spear auxilia are now at the first cohort's sides (4th line); sword auxilia can take the same places of legionary cohorts too. I can post the file if you want.

Sure Garnier, I'd like to have your comments
Try it with a marian legion with 3-4 spear auxilia and some sword auxilia instead of legionary cohorts. I did some minor changes to cavalry too. Let me know what you think
P.S. This only affects human player formation, AI behavour is unchanged.

I tried it, but it screwed up my initial formation.

Anyway, I found a better solution. Click the special formations button and use the one on the lower left.

This is not a problem but how Sinuhet's formations have been set up since SPQR 6.0 I think ;-) He preferred the inital formation with auxilia in the first rank unfortunately.

The solution is to Group all units ('G') and press 'SHIFT+2' for pre-marian legions or 'SHIFT+5' for post-marian legions... you will have all legionnaries in the front and auxilia/triari in the back... hope it helps

You cant all of this was talked about in the early days of RTW modding and we couldnt do it, we even tried using the horse wedge formation which caused a CTD. lol I liked the Boudicca DVD also, which is part of my collection from the history channel. ;-)

BTW Not all the formations in SPQR are for one period, example is I had him make some of the formations for Premarius legions and some for Postmarius. So the buttons will work for one army and look like crap for the other.

checkerboard is for Post marius units. lol

I didnt design or really use the formations, they are there for those who use them. There is a wonderful CA bug that causes units or legions NOT to listen to you when they are in formation. lol so I usually manual setup all the time. ;-)

What I do, is make the formation that way, put the spearmen on the flanks, the javelin men behind the legionaries. Then ungroup and then regroup. Now when you move them, they move properly.

Eheh I cannot bother in placing the units manually, this was the reason I didn't use roman formations in vanilla: it took too much time to deploy the units and that spoiled all the fun!
One of the best thing of SPQR is the human formations: at last I can use pre-marian and [post-]marian formations and actually enjoy doing so!
When I saw the new formations I understood they could be modded, so I changed them to suit my needs; I moved cavalry, sword auxilia and spear auxilia, and now I can play at ease without ever placing units manually
