Default Best catholic faction high period?

With the imminent release of the new version I want to try my hand at a faction with great high period infantry/cavalry. I quite fancied playing HRE as I haven't tried this faction yet and it has a pretty good all round mixture of units - but I'm fed up with playing England. I love the old armour upgrades - there's something special watching your army form up with shiney suits of full plate amour

What would your choice be and why?

I love playing with the spanish, in my opinion they have the coolest looking armies (especially when fully equiped!). Your elite armies will destroy the Islamic factions! (and maybe some catholic/orthodox factions to? ^^ )

I must admit the Spaniards are pretty cool now - I got into a pretty nasty war with them (playing as England in my now defunct campaign) and the reskin is superb. They have a nice variety of units.

But I can't help feel the cavalry of the French is supposedly the best in the West - is this true since the modification?

Even though Denmark has mediocre gunpowder units, they have some of the best infantry in the game and decent cavalry.

My fav faction has to be the Moors though... Camel Gunners, Sudanese Gunners and Christian Guard absolutely own.

my problem is I can never seem to get to the gunpowder era, by that time my Empire looks like the Roman Empire circa 100 AD or something. so far the farthest I've gotten to is 1283, how do you keep in the game for so long??

Surely would be nice to have the option of starting the high era like MTW1

The quickest route may not always be the most fun.

I try not to blitz and i stay in favour with the pope. I also ally with my direct neighbours and this appears to help, especially later on it the game. I actually find it more rewarding to focus on the settlements you start with and built them up - and perhaps focus your effort on one army rather than several smaller battle groups. This gives the AI a good chance. You can then storm into the enemy settlements towards the end of the game when they are huge cities/citadels. It's a much more rewarding game.

I'm still thinking France guys - in terms of the heavy cavalry I think it's hard to beat? But Denmark is a good second on my list, then maybe HRE.

France, Spain and HRE all come to mind. But all told, its hell getting open spaces to unleash those charges anyway.

In RTW I am an awesome Cavalry commander, in MTW2, cavalry are bait. Linked unit charges own me

I'd say you arent using your space wisely enough then! I like to use cavalry in wide open spaces when I get the chance. My battle lines are huge and the maps are generally large enough to cope. If you are in a heavily built up area, then change your tactics and use infantry instead. That said I havent been able to really focus on cavalry tactics yet, hence my question. I'm pretty dead set on France at the moment.

Play how you think your characters would play... for better and worse... Also avoid exploits and consciously hamper your own growth. It works for me

Denmark has great unique units... everything from Vikings and Huscarls, to War Clerics... I am enjoying Venice as a good faction for classic Medevil warfare... Heavily armored knights and a solid battle line.

    Seth:

I was laughing at myself with that statement, not you. I thought the mean ol' vikers had em too. I still hold to the idea that some of them might have had em so...pffffft! to all the no-horners.

But to answer your question, from my perspective...
I only ever thought there were 2 types of viking.
    1. The one(s) trying to kill you (or who ever is doing the describing)
    2. The one(s) not trying to kill you (or who ever is doing the describing)

I wonder if there was much specialization at all among the viking warrior class?
