Can anyone offer some suggestions on how to deal with, or baically wipe the French off the map as England? Does it require an early strike on several of their settlements within the first few turns of the game?

I always marry the French princess to your faction heir immediately. This results in goodwill, and she has a lot of charm and is therefore likely to produce more children.
Try to seize the French channel coast before the French do, as these are money makers and will thwart French expansion.
Offer the French token gifts (few hundred florins) from time to time, as this will increase their feeling for you.
Over time, the French will have their hands full with the HRE and Milan, allowing you to build a dominant position in the British Isles.

Great strategy Recluse with buying Angers and Toulouse! In my game, I managed to do that at 3500 for 3 turns and alliance with the French. For some reason I didn't get the option to marry my heir to their princess (does it matter if my diplomat talks to their princess directly? I couldn't find her on the map)
By the time the French saw through the deal and attacked with Milan, I had control over all of British Isles minus Ireland and all the land on the western coast, down to Toulouse. The French was no challenge with their militia army as I was prepared with a professional army with longbows and I wiped them off the map.

On my Milan game i took care of them earlynow most of france is mine except only two french castles which doesnt give enough income.
Retreat from Caen. Let the French have it. Focus on eliminating Scotland and consolidating your position on the isles. Build up about 6 full stacks and then blitz through France. land at Bruges, Caen, Rennes, and Bordeaux, with the last two stacks making their way to Paris and Rheims. You should be able to take all of those cities in one turn and thereby crippling France.
wait until the pope gets old, build a lot of units and just run a scorched earth campaign on them early campaign. That way you get plenty of money to cover the cost of your armies and you dont have to worry about loyalty after you capture a settlement. Its best to beat france as early as possible as their later periods units can dish out some damage to your troops.

you've got to be kidding me, england is the easiest faction to play with. Your stuck in a couner with basically one faction threatning you. All im going to say is take Ireland and the rest of Britain. Hold your position in france then just advance slowly into france, start by bruges, antwerp, rennes and go from their.
