Hi Coni,
Yes, the 5th century Ibfd units are out dated in the Justinian mod. It is something we are very aware of and we are hoping to correct it. The mod has been the project of Elrond and I have helped when I could and has given me permission to improve upon it. The problem is I'm still trying to make some improvements on the Rio Mods thus have no time as of yet. But Elrond is looking for suggesstions so please go ahead and let him know what changes you would like to see.
With the Rio mod I'm not overly concerned about using the same Comitatenses unit for the Mod starts off only 20+ years after the original IBFD but having said that yes I want to change some of the units slightly through texturing. An example would be the differences between the pseudo Comitatenses, Comitatenses, and a mid 5th century Comitatenses (for the 463ad campaign)Also Ostrogoth units such as the Saiones retexturing for historical realness. The units(as does the original IBFD mod) runs into the 6th century and off course we know the Units of this era are different. But keep in mind all mods run into this problem of starting off with historically correct units, but after several hundred years, The mods most advanced elite units are out of date.
During the 5th century, Comitatenses were broken up into a pseudo Comitatenses type, that is one equipped in between a limitanei and the Comitatenses. The pseudo Comitatenses and the limitanei are still frontier troops guarding what ever frontier there is left. The elite Roman troops such as the comitatenses armatus are an Empire East unit and recruited in selected regional ares. comitatenses first cohort can only be recruit in specific regions. and the reg. comitatenses now can only be recruited in the Siege engineer Corps: a logistical engineering building that allows the unit to sap. The Rio Mod is set up like this and I think very much as it was in history. I've added the Siege engineer Corps bld. through my concept of Roman logistics. This was my idea and to me a way of using a bit of historical imagination to the mod.
limitanei: recruitment not limited
pseudo Comitatenses: recruitment not limited
comitatenses reg: recruitment limited
comitatenses armatus: recruitment limited
comitatenses first cohort: recruitment limited
A few things to keep in mind. Yes the Rio Mod is based on history but at the same I've allowed the game to be open to some historical imagination. The game does not have to play true to how it did played out in history.
Textures are something that I'm currently learning and can hopefully am looking into to use to better the Rio Mod. I agree it is certainly something that could help.
