Should I get vista on my new computer or good old reliable xp?
Should I get vista on my new computer or good old reliable xp?
Definitely Vista.

Why?
Seems like the vast majority of my software won't work on it, including many of my old games.

Do you have a DX10 card or intend to buy one any time soon? Then get vista otherwise just get xp.
The card that I'll be getting with the new computer will be directX10 compatible. Still..... i could always pay for the xp to vista upgrade when games start coming out that can actually use this.
Its strange, xp costs more than basic vista now, but the premium vista costs the same as xp. Sounds like microsoft is desperate to flog everybody their flawed OS.
People who have vista, how many problems have you had with software and games?
No problems.. well, i think Battlefield 2142 has some problems for my friend - he's using an nvidia 8800 and vista, im using an ATI x1800 with vista and have no problems with it, so who knows.
I cant really comment on many older games as i don't play many these days but the vast majority of software does work from what i've seen.
Plus vista looks nicer and has better support for future games..
I know it doesn't really matter, but then i don't take my computer too seriously - Vista looks good and runs well, has a few new things to play with and i got it fairly cheap from ebuyer. I know its not perfect yet and I'm sure there are plenty of downsides to Vista, but as a relatively casual PC user i haven't seen any.
well i got vista home premium for free cuz my HP laptop came with a free upgrade to it. and i'm really unsure about installing it i read that people like it and love it and then there some that say there are problems. i'm really waiting for the first Service Pack to come out this fall and install it. an old friend of mine said that nearly all programs are buggy on Vista atm. XP has more compatability. also i how do i know if my video card is dx10 compatible i'm assuming it is since it is with my laptop that is vista capable.
vista capable has nothign to do with dx 10 compatability, all you need to use the full features of the vista interface is a dx9 card. If you want to use dx10 in games you need a directx 10 compatable card. To check if it's dx10 capable you need to use start> run > dxdiag (unless it changed with vista), it shoudl tell you your card name somewhere. If it's an 8000series nvidia or a 2000 series radeon it's compatable with dx10.

I think I'll go with vista.
It seems like a lot of games and software have patches and that there are even vista patches to improve compatability. Everybody will be using it in game development with dx10 eventually, so I will have to get it at some stage, might aswell get it with the new computer.
If I have problems I can always remove it and install xp instead.
hmmm well i talked to lt_1956 and he says to not use vista at all. so the only way i'm going to use it is when the dx10 games come out. i'm very happy with XP and thank you all for your help.
@Doono i did dxdiag and mine isn't dx10 compatible as far as i could tell but my gfx card is upgradable which is good. again thanks your all of y'alls help
Hay I was at work and this was in the post, I thought it was kind of relevant to this conversation.
I find games on Vista work fine, 'Master Of Olympus: Zeus' being the oldest one installed there atm. The only issues I have had are with Vista putting my M2TW saves and BF2 stats into a hidden folder for some reason, but they are easily retreivable.

all this stuff is making my head spin about whether or not to install it. i mean it wouldn't hurt too though. so if i don't like it could i go back to XP or am i stuck with Vista? eagerly waiting a reply cuz i have the install disc next to me.
There is no real reason to upgrade (unless you want the DX10 compatibility right now) but there are no problems involved either.
Every piece of software I ever had is fully compatible
