    Default TLR Vs. LtC

    Hello,

I've been playing LtC a great deal, but am considering a switch. I enjoy LtC a great deal, but I'm looking for... just a bigger challenge, really. I swept through Spain with 2 stacks yesterday with almost no problem. I've never lost a battle (besides naval battles), and, in all my time playing TW games (since M1), I've never lost a campaign. I also want to preserve that sense of RTS meets Civ gameplay. The first mod I tried was EB for Rome (I really like realism). But I didn't like the unfinished quality it presented. The game played quite nice, but the campaign map reminded me of the original Civilization. So I went back to Vanilla.

Well there's a lot that interests me with this mod. I'm wondering, how do the two compare? And of course, I'm not looking for "That mod sucks, this mod rocks," but more of a discussion. Also, is this mod...ready? Or should I wait for the next version, and when is that expected? Biggest reason I ask is because doing a clean uninstall/reinstall takes FOREVER, so I want to be certain I'm making a good move.

    Thanks,

    This mods roc.... oh nevermind

In a bit more serious tone, I'll compare the two.

I agree with you LTC was pretty easy you got large stacks of late medieval troops pretty early and the AI didn't know how to handle them too well.

In TLR, you gain access only to the basic level of troops until you hit certain times in the campaign where, for example chain is discovered. What this means is that you can acquire all possible troops (once you built up your barracks enough) for that era. Once the chain era comes to play your now able to recruit units that use chain as well.

What happens is that you'll a bunch of armies consisting of militia, and basic levy troops. Then when chain comes (it comes fairly early) you'll start to see the ai add chain troops to the stacks.

In TLR you wont be able to have 4-5 stacks on the go. Period. You'll have, at best, half-3/4 stack at the beginning, then 50 turns or so depending on your economic management you'll have enough to have a full stack, another 50 a stack and a half, and so on. Till basically you get 2-3 stacks which basically happens 300-400 turns in (and some really good skill on your part).

What happens is that you can no longer blitz through the worldmap. Each attack must be carefully decided on wither its economic to attack this settlement or should I bring my army over here because this faction might be attacking.

I can assure you, taking spain is no small feat. Be prepared for a long and drawn out war (which you'll probably lose if just rushed in).

As england in LTC I conquered all of Great Britian, France, and part of spain and HRE in close to 150 turns. As England in TLR I have Southern England, Normandy and a few provinces in Egypt which I'm going to lose soon to the Fatimds or whatever those jerks call themselves >( . Thats at turn 143.

Also I can field to 3/4 armies but my economics is starting to hurt from it. Lastly my garrisons for settlements, are no longer 4-5 units of medium to high end troops. Instead I'm practically forced to have 1-2 town militia protecting my settlements (slightly more for settlements on the border) otherwise my economy would crash.

This makes for a harder, but a lot more enjoyable campaign experience.

I can't remember the battles for LTC, but they should be comparable to TLR. While the AI does some stupid moves still, its more a vanilla thing then TLR (though TLR does improve the AI from stock.)

Dex, I also hated EB, played it once and uninstalled it.

As for the mod being ready, well yes. All these updates now are improvements and additions its completely stable, more so then vanilla I find (though a few people have problems which torn readily fixes).

The next addition should be out soon, and its going to add/change quite a bit. However, most people here, on the boards, are asking torn to take his time and perfect it since they are having so much fun with 2.0.

Hope this answers your questions. TLR, in a nutshell, is trying to blend realism with balance, and of course fun. In admist that torn is trying to make it more difficult but not insane.

I highly suggest this mod, as well as, DLV (another total conversion) both of them can be installed together because they have their own separate folders instead of overwriting the main MTW2 files. Check with LTC to see if it too has its own folder (it really should), that way you don't have to uninstall your game.

    Have fun!

Thanks for the reply! Sounds great to me! I really like the idea of sweating over territorial gain and not having to use house rules in order to make things difficult. Be sure I'll be giving it a try sometime very soon!

If your not in a hurry, I would play LTC for a bit longer and wait till TLR 2.1.0 to come out (which should be shortly) since its likely not going to be savegame compatible (due to all the new features).
