    Default Hey, New man!

    Hey, everyone...

My friend and I just install the SPQR last week, now we have playing for weeks. I have to say it really fun and close to real history. Good works on the mod. I have a question about the nations economic, specially Roman is seem a bit low. I have a hard time to raise money and keep up a number of army to fight with Gaul and Carthage, I lost about 2000 men and one far north city to stop Gaul and I give up two of my southern cities to save up army to fight with Carthage, which I just fight my last battle with them last night, I totally lost 7000 men and my economic is so bad, that makes me want to cry. Most of my unit is not match with the countries around me, I just want to know, if there are possible that in the next patch or upgrade that Roman can have a little better economic, because in history Roman is poorer than Carthage but doesn't mean they can't maintain a given number of army. Don't you think? But most the unit setting was so good, make the game more harder and AI seem more intelligent. Spartan was the elite unit, they can crash any unit in the SPQR and maybe only the elephant can stop them. Right now I am going to take back my city on Sicily, 4000men is going to face the famous Spartan army, wish me good luck. I think Greek, Carthage and Macedon economic setting and start fund is pretty good, I just wish Roman can be improve a bit on it too. Thanks!!!

oh, I almost forgot. The unit of urban cohort, seems a bit different than most of the original CA setting or mod setting. I want to know why? I mean isn't it supposed to look like legionnaire? Maybe my history knowledge is not good on this one, but I want to know why is SPQR makes the urban cohort look like town watch. Thanks!!!

My economy is almost too good in my M/M SPQR game, in 198 BC.

Right at the start, move lucius julius to arretium and use the 5000 starting money to make a mine there. Then focus on economy buildings, and don't hire too many men at the start. The mine in arretium is key.

This is what i did and focused on economic buildings and arretium makes 18,000 a turn alone. A lot fo my cities in africa and gaul are in negative but it still cancels out i have 20 legions in the field defending the german frontier and fighting the greeks.

    btw this is on 6.4.

And the urban cohorts were basically a town guard/nightwatchmen/fire brigade, they are wrongly portrayed in vanilla as elite warriors above legionnaires.

But the Gaul and Carthage is attacking me, what should I do about that, I mean I have to stop them with army you know, my unit is just not good enough so I need number to over come that.

Oh well if you aren't able to beat hannibal and his troops and take taras, then yeah perhaps you're screwed and you'll need to start over. But after taking taras and killing hannibals armies, carthage won't invade. Then you can focus on economy and killing gaul until you're ready to invade carthage yourself.

Also please Read the README, it will answer you questions you asked so far. Actually MOST complain that they make too much money in SPQR, but you will have to get rid of hannibal first before that starts to happen.

Also please look at the House rules they help make the game more fun, example is having a legion of 4000 means your not building the correct legions. as they would be way less than that, Try playing historical and you may not lose you battles so much. In SPQR the tactics of building one unit to win the game wont work, you will eventually lose.

Though a legion must be able to adapt, for example in my Gaul campians I drop the velites and have additional Slingers instead, and for Greece I lose the slingers (to have them would make be break house rules) and have more velites or perhaps Javilien cavarly, or infact elephants.
And some light artillary can be useufull aswell, but they are dangerous only use them when your units are nowhere near.

Against gaul I usually replace my equites with barbarian noble cav, and replace slingers with barbarian mercenary swordsmen.

Against greece, I replace losses with various kinds of hoplites.

Btw Lt, are the illyrian mercenaries supposed to look like this? Looks like they are still using their old model but the skin has been changed..

Playing as greeks makes a far easier campaign. You need to play with romans to get the real SPQR experience, that is what SPQR was made for, and what its all about.

something tells me that ur using urban cohorts in your campaign liquidj, considering the 4000 units in your armies. urban cohorts are the worst units for rome and are only intended to be used as town garrisons.

Oh...Not really, Konig. my Rome play didn't develop that late, most of my city has only 2000 people. When I asked the question about urban cohort is because I used to play CA original setting and other mod setting, which they all have a better looking urban cohort that looks like a update version of first cohort, but in SPQR, urban cohort doesn't look like that, but just a update version of town watch, which make me a bit strange with it. That is also why I hope SPQR can put that into consideration for the next patch. A better unit look for the urban cohort.

There is no next Patch this is it, enjoy the mod. As for the Urban Cohorts, they arent suppose to look cool, they were usually Old men about 50-65 and they put out fires and policed the town. lol

Thats like saying the police should be more armed than the Military, even though they seem to be doing that lately.....

Garnier Thansk for the Bug, Seems like that might actually be an old one? I dont remember editing that file to change the skin, I added the thracian because greek and iryllian were both the same unit basically. lol

Just change the Greek heavy peltast texture for merc in the Descr_Model_Battle.txt to this.

    SPQR_PELTAST_MERC_HEAVY.TGA

I have no plans to bother my hosts with another update version of SPQR for a none CTD problem. ;-) They are kind enough to support the costs of the bandwidth and have done quite alot already for me. But if a ton of questions come from people later (which I doubt mainly because not everyone is making armies of MERCS.) Then I WILL post this text above. I think most wont even use the units to notice and if they do would know how to fix them.

BTW I still think its close to a violation of House rules to the Level you are using mercs. You should be recruiting more regular legions. While Rome used Mercs they didnt to the level your doing so early in your campaign,

Thank you, LT....I know some of my questions are a bit fastidious but thanks for answering my question, I guess you had more research on the urban cohort than I do, because I just read from the CA unit describe, sounds to me, they are a good unit as good as the army. Anyway, there are no point keep talking about this topic. Thanks again!!!
