Default I've killed Samurai, Knights, Romans and Knights again.

So guys, lets pool your thoughts. We gamers have been blessed with some great games in the Total War series. We had Shogun, MTW, Rome, and MTW2. What's next?! What other lands are in need of our iron fists!?

What do you think is next in line for the Total War Franchise?

Me personally, I'd love to see a re-visit to the world of Feudal Japan. Granted I played the game like twice, and I forgot what was in it, having more samurai wars with this Next-Gen capability is a wonderful thought. A game encompassing all of China, Korea, Mongolia, and Japan would make me very happy.

OK, maybe not ALLLLL of China, but u get what i'm sayin.

Yea baby that's what i'm talkin about! "China: Total War"

When I thought of it I was mostly thinking of samurai and shogun's like Tokugawa, but China does have a very good history about it too! Imperial China could be well represented in Total War and be hella fun, however I am wondering something. As things go in the Ancient Far East, Samurai first started showing up in Japan around in like what, the 11-1300's? And Ancient China, wasn't the Great Wall built around those times? Hmm.. I think it's all pretty close! Plus you even STILL get the Mongol Invasions! Oooo, but this time it's "actually" Ghengis! Oh and don't forget Kublai Kahn tried to invade Japan with a fleet. -Rubs his hands together- Oh yea! And, even though alot of factions (if you split nations up to those "states" which I hope they would) would have similar units, alot of very slight diversity would exist. Man a game that covers all of that would be most appreciated. Hell, if they don't make it someone Mod it!

(Pffft, Garnier I know where you're coming from but jeeeeeeeZ. You know I bet there are Lots of threads about this elsewhere, but then again, I don't care what those people think. The people I want to hear from come from this forum area, if they like what I like I can call them both intellectual and cool! =)

well why call it rome 2? Why not just "Dark ages" spanning from the fall of rome to right before the medieval ages?

That would be most desirable for me.

I think Rome 2 is the most likely option, simply because making a TW game is such a costly endeavour they have to make it instantly marketable. Period recognition, and all that. There's no point in taking chances with so much money at stake. It's a little like Hollywood.

China could be an option, given the Chinese market, but it's really small compared to the Western audiences that prefer something they recognise. China's middle class simply isn't that big, rich or computer-game savvy, yet. Japanese generally don't like strategy games, and are mostly console people.

I'd love it if CA were to revisit roman times. I was very interested in the general history of the period and the expansion of the roman empire before RTW but became engrossed in it after playing the game, especially after experiencing the greatest mod I've ever played: Rome: Total Realism.

Rome 2 would be amazing in my book, as long as it's made even better than the original Rome of course.

Sure, but it probably won't be released for at least another year. Right now I have to say Broken Crescent is looking a very decent mod that will surely add enough life to the game to last me until Realism or another major mod is released. I'm really looking forward to LTC 3.0 as well!

I reckon they should make something like

    Campaigns: Total War

With lots of different mini campaigns from different eras to choose from. Ancient Greece, Rome, Medieval, Asia, America, etc.
Long campaigns are no fun anymore. After 100 turns you dominate most of the world and it gets a bit boring. Only thing that makes you keep playing is to see new units or weapons.

But if you have a short (100 turns or so) campaign right into the action... No spear militia, velites or crap like that. We want Knights, Praetorian Cohorts, Napoleon armies and Conquistadores straight away!!!

Basically taking the idea of "Kingdoms" a bit further and making a whole game mixing different civilisation and time periods

I'm torn here. I love historically based games, but one of the problems with them is that there are some very strict parameters gaming companies must follow, or they run the risk of being chastised by people like us for lack of realism. I've recently starting playing Medieval War 2 more than Rome Total War for the first time. Now that mods have caught up to the game, its actually as fun to play as Rome in many ways. I'd personally love to see a game that lets you try to guide a faction from the time period of 270 BC to the medieval times. Why can't we have Rome stand the test of time and fight on into the time period of MTW2? Its no "less realistic" than the concept of someone guiding a faction like Numidia to world domination in the original game! Seeing the evolution of the units over such a long time period would be really appealing for me. Starting off with familiar hastati/principes/triari and evolving into the type of units used in mtw2, but not being FORCED to take a step backwards (as in the Barbarian Expansion Western Roman Empire) in unit quality or experience. All of this is very appealing to me. Combining the two games somehow. Or doing what they did with A game called Crusader Kings and Europa Universalis 2; you could export your CK game into EU2 and continue. Make Rome 2 exportable into MTW2. Not to mention how enjoyable it would be to keep The Seleucid Empire or Ptolemaic Dynasty alive beyond the period in which Rome absorbed them. Guide a faction to the 600's and try to hold off the tide of Arabic invasions. Make it very difficult (if not near-impossible) to maintain a large empire intact. I hope we see something like this soon.

I'm not nearly as interested in Asian games, to be quite honest. Would I buy and play Samurai 2? Yes, of course. But I hope they go in a different direction. Or maybe do both? These games sell well enough that I'd think they could manage that.

Which brings me to option #3. A fantasy game. Which I think would be immensely popular. I'm honestly shocked no company has copied the RTW style of game and done this. The Heroes of Might and Magic engine is simply old and outdated. But a game in their world, using family trees and featuring the kind of battles we get in RTW and MTW2 would be anything but dull.

Whatever they do, I just hope its out in 2008.

Darviathar, I agree here. One of the utterly brilliant aspects of Civilization is how the game changed character with time. From bronze age, over medieval and renaissance times, to industrial times, it plays differently in each age. I wish the TW series would have a little of that too. Unfortunately, since pikes and muskets are crap in M2TW, and take too long to get, the game never really features the developments in warfare that did in fact take place in medieval to renaissance times. Sad, really.
