    Icon5 Vista Poll

I haven't seen a poll here about this, so why not post a poll that is pretty much in every tech-sites you come across.

Try to explain, if you have Vista, then which version and what you like about and what you don't like about.

If you don't have Vista, then indicate what OS you have and why you haven't bought Vista yet, or planning to upgrade at all ever, from your current OS.

Also say, if you have conflicts/bugs/disfunction within Vista with any software or hardware with Vista, which hasn't been solved yet.

Thanks ahead, I want to make up my mind about this.

I'm using XP and I'm not planning to switch to Vista until some good DX10 games come out, because DX10 is the only reason for me to switch.

I have Vista Home Premium edition (32 bit) and it blows ,Got my laptop from Dell and they wouldn't let me have XP. I'm running with Pentium Dual core 1.6 ,1gb Ram and its still slower than my old xp with 512 meg Ram. Poo (thats a technical term you know)

Vista works fine on my system, and I got it for free (don't ask how) so it's a very good deal. Only Battlefield 1942 has some compatibility issues.

I have vista 32 bit ultimate.

    tis ok. Nice 'shiny' stuff.
but hardware problems and driver problems.

First of all, my sound card didn't have a driver for vista, but i got it working thanks to some modified drivers i found. My phone dosent work yet, as Sony Ericsson haven't released the drivers yet. and a few of my programs simply don't work, under compatibility settings or otherwise.

Meh. it was the same when i went to XP from 2000 pro.
    It will get better.

Its very good but there are a few bugs in it and not all software is compatible.

These problems are being fixed as time goes by and when the first service pack is released in the fall it should be a lot better.

I would wait untill then - appart from the number of bugs and compatibly issues being shorted out by then, there are also several cheaper direct x 10 cards being released by then as well as quite a few games that use it.

Vista is a good OS (better than XP) so with 99% of people its a matter of when not if they will upgrade.

btw I have Vista Ulimate (64 bit)

Vista Ultimate 64 bit for me and I like it. I have disabled some things that have been problem areas (UAC, Driver Signing and such). Additionally I agree with Elrond that it's just a matter of when not If. It's the future if your ever going to utilize DX10.

    I have Home Premium Vista

Runs great (not one crash yet, something I certainly couldn't say about XP), looks great, feels great. The only thing I didn't like was the UAC, which is easy enough to shut off. There is still some limited driver support, but that is changing and hasn't been too big of an issue for me anyway.

I have Vista business on my tablet and still run XP on my desktop - main reason why I ove it is because pen functionality is so much better than with XP tablet edition - oh and I like readyboost as well, altthough Vista made me plan to upgrade ram (just ordered two gigs for my C2D 7200, as it's really cheap atm...).

    Thanks all the input.
    How's that ready-boost thingy?

I heard, the OS notices what programs have been used the most frequently and tries to allocate all resources to those.

or is that a different thing?

They are separate features but work together. There value diminishes as you add more RAM. There's article from Toms Hardware about it.

Don't have vista, and don't need it either because XP runs everything I need perfect. No reason to spend money on something I don't need.

I felt this way too until I realized how bored I was with XP; we've been using it forever. The funny thing is that after using Vista for a while, you start to see that on the surface there is really not that much about it that is different from XP (though I would never go back to it).

I got a new computer, complete with a DX10 card. I accidently messed up my drive when I installed linux, so instead of installing everything again I'm just going to install Vista (which I will be receiving for graduation).

I'll see about it then, I'm hoping it will be nice. I really hope BF1942 can work.

I'll post back when I have it installed - Thursday.

BF1942 works, but only (for me) if I put it in compatability mode for Windows 95 (I know, it sounds funny, but it works!)

Before I did that it CTD'd really often.

Well there is a definite trend developing with that poll. The people who have Vista like it, the people who don't and most likely have never used it, dislike it.

Ive used it and its ok, it ran slow because it was on a slow machine. Other than that Im in no hurry to upgrade, moreover I'm in no hurry to shell out the money they want for it.

Doesn't anybody think Vista is doing a horrible job of trying to implement Unix style security? It now offers a lot of improvement over previous MS systems in that area, but the way you have to manage everything manually in a very unorderly and uncentralised fashion really blows. Not to mention Vista runs incredibly slow on pretty powerfull machines. I understand the need for more resources to run extra OS features, but I don't believe I should need new hardware to display 3D icons with alpha transparency.

Actually, the one thing I hate about Microsoft, is the way they force everybody to buy the latest version, even if they don't want/need it by discontinuing support for older systems and withdrawing them from the market. The only reason why I have the damned thing is that it came with my laptop and there was no other option in the store. Apparently the US market doesn't really have the concept of selling you a system with free Unix installed on it in order to bypass the law and let you install whatever (and however) you please on it later.

Still, the price difference compared to home was huge, so I bought it anyway. I guess it really pays to get rid of that 30% import duty on components. I wish it came with XP or Linux though. Not that I won't remedy that at the first opportunity...
