    Default 'freeride'

ive just seen on the news that worcester town council has started an initiative called 'freeride'. its like what i believe happens in places in the netherlands where bicycles are left around town for anyone to use. 50 bikes have been placed about the town and they are all recycled old bikes to try and prevent thieves or vandals. i think its a briliant idea that i would love to use if it was in my city and a great idea to reduce congestion/pollution. i just know however every last bike will be stolen or vandalised by ****ing scallys. what do you think?

they should do that, but set up like extra cycle paths with rails on em, then attach the bikes to the rails so its in one big loop. A bit like a monorail where you have to pedal. It discourages the bikes being stolen, and makes it a damn sight harder to do it, too. lol. It's a good initiative though.

Yeah, well, better than said drunks crashing cars into each other, no? I like this idea - if it works, as it does in the Netherlands, it'd be awesome.

Ehm...it didn't work in the Netherlands.
We have a slightly different system in Amsterdam now: when your bicycle gets stolen by a heroine addict, you simply buy a new bicycle from another heroine addict for the price of a fix (20 euro's).

I think it works in Denmark, though.

it's a waste of money and terribly naive of the municipality referenced to even consider this a good idea.

perhaps the thread should be re-titled, "Free Recycled Bicycles"

Those rear tire locks are very easy to open.
They are OK for during the day when you only want to keep your bike unattended for a couple of minutes, and don't want to bother with real locks.
But other than that, they are completely useless.

i dunno - i think the chavs will steal half of them and throw them into the river.

personally i wouldnt use it, seems like a tramps thing to use shared recycled bikes, i would use my own if i had too

Actually, I remember watching piece on CBS This Sunday Morning(an interesting, laid back sunday morning news program) where on town in the U.S. actually does have something like that. And it seemed to work.
