XFX hooked me up!!

As some of you know, I had 2 512MB XFX GeForce 7900GTX's in SLI. Had, is the optimal word here. Unbelievably, both of them went bad at the same time! Unbelievable. My beloved 7900's were apparently toast. Fortunately, I purchased my twins from XFX because of their Double Lifetime Warranty.

I RMAed both cards back to XFX, and after extensive testing of both cards they verified that both GTX's were indeed dead, after only one year in service. I had previously had to order 5 from Newegg to get 2 that worked, and now even those two were history. A truly sad, if not typical, chapter in tech history.

So what does XFX decided to do? Well.....

Because of my warranty, and my checkered RMA history with my original 7900GTX's, XFX is replacing them both with 2 640MB 8800GTS'!! Yeah baby, yeah! Hell yeah! Let's hear it for the boys at XFX and their Double Lifetime Warranty!! Woot!

Lesson learned here.....behind every great video card, is a great warranty!!

Now thats customer service. I'm also containing my horrible urges...

did they give you any idea as to what went wrong with the two 7 series cards? Its odd that both would die at the same time unless you fried them and I dont think any warranty in the world would cover that.

Congrats, nice to see a company take care of it's customers.

So you've been through 5 of them? Not to rain on your parade but it seems they have some serious quality issues?

I'm very happy for you. I have nothing to complain about myself, so I don't feel jealous. I just got an X1900XT as a hand-me-down when my brother bought the X2900XT.

I think the lesson of this story for me is indeed I should get XFX for my upcoming GFX purchase.

I think I've learned something important here today.

Always buy XFX cards. When they fry, celebrate!

(Just got an 8600 actually, very pleased with it but it is just toasted by that 8800.)

I went to their site and XFX does indeed have a double lifetime guarantee. Even then though you would have to imagine what happened in this case isn't their modus operandi.

All in all I will look at XFX and ask some questions around other tech forums. For me it would be a choice between possibly XFX or EVGA as EVGA has their step up program which will give you credit towards the purchase of a new card when you trade in your old card.

They never got specific about how they failed but apparently both failed seperate tests. One artifacted from the start but it took a couple of tests to cause the second one to fail. Before the second card failed though, they said they were going to replace both to enable me to maintain SLI! I thought that was pretty cool because they were willing to replace both cards even though they suspected one of 'em was still good.

Yeah, I think the 7900GTX's were somehow flawed from the beginning. If ya'll have noticed, only Asus still offers the 7900GTX for retail sale, and it's only been a year since the 7900GTX's were released. Short life span. Heck, the 7800GTX is still on the market! XFX seemed unable or unwilling to replace my cards with another set of 7900GTX's so I suspect those models are no longer in production or there is a component or design flaw that the industry discovered but hasn't gone public about. They OC well but I also suspect that they are unusually vulnerable to being damaged by OCing too.

As far as both dying at the same time, I think being linked in SLI had something to do with it, but that's just my suspicion.
Watch your warranties guys, because without that warranty, I'd have been out $1,000.00! Instead, I got an upgrade to DX10, more VC memory MBs and better design architecture. I was very fortunate. Watch your warranties guys....
