I read some disturbing stuff in the other thread I created. There were some of you who wanted to play Rome: Total War online, but couldn't get connected. I had a few problems back in December 2006 when I first tried to get connected to GameSpy (RTW's game server).
Now, I'm far from being a computer expert, but here are some tips I can provide for you:
CHECKING YOUR PATCH VERSION
1) Before you even connect online, make sure you know which version/patch you have. If you navigate through your game menu under "Options," you'll see a number somewhere on your screen such as 1.2, 1.3, 1.4, etc. The most up-to-date patch is version 1.5. If you don't have version 1.5, you'll have to download it from one of the many patch providers. Before getting 1.5, though, you'll have to download 1.3 first (don't ask me why!)
If you have the Total Eras box collection or the RTW Gold Edition, then you already have 1.5.
HAMACHI CONFLICTS
Do you have Hamachi installed? If so, you won't be able to play games on Gamespy. You'll have to un-install Hamachi before you can play on Gamespy. Thank you to Teo for confirming this.
TYPING IN YOUR CD-KEY
2) In reference to Rome: Total War, you can't play this game online until you have manually typed in your CD-Key. The game never asks you for this at any point (not even during installation). So, to get there, find the option under the game menu called "Change CD-Key." DO NOT type in your CD-Key where it says "Enter Player's Name."
Now find your CD-Key (either located on a separate piece of paper or in your instruction booklet), and type in your CD-Key exactly as it appears! Don't confuse "0" with "O." Also, type in the hyphens too between each sequence of numbers/letters.
PICKING A SCREENNAME ON GAMESPY AND LOGGING ON
3) If you know you have the latest version installed, and you've typed in your CD-Key already, then click on "Multiplayer," and hopefully, you see a message:
"You have Successfully logged-on to Gamespy!"
When you pick your name, be aware be aware that someone might already be using that name online. But instead of denying you access to a name like "Julius_Caesar," Gamespy will automatically add some numbers to it like "Julius_Caesar4554," and you will be on your way to playing online. If you can't log-on, then you might want to wait a few minutes, and try again. Sometimes, Gamespy has issues. But if you're still not getting on...
FIREWALL ISSUES?
4) If you can't get connected yet, then it might be your Firewall. If that's the case, then scroll down and read msTubbZ's technical answer to your problem.
ROUTER ISSUES?
5) If you can't even get connected or if you're constantly getting kicked off Gamespy (before you can even join a game), then it might be your Router giving you a hard time. I bypassed this problem by disconnecting from my Router; then I simply re-connect directly through my modem. If that doesn't help, then scroll down and read msTubbZ's technical answer to your problem.
OPTIMIZING YOUR COMPUTER FOR ONLINE GAMING
6) If you have a crappy computer, you might want to turn your graphic detail down. That'll make your online battles run smoother.
NAVIGATING ON MULTIPLAYER
7) There are 3 Rooms in GameSpy. The Friendly Chat is where you'll find most players. Nowadays, the Chat Lobby is filled with "Napoleonic" (mod) players.
HOSTING A GAME OR WAITING FOR A GAME
8) If you make a game, keep in mind that it takes a moment for it appear to other players. And if you're waiting for a friend's game, you should constantly hit the "Refresh" buttom to see if the game appears.
CHATTING ONLINE
9) To chat during a game, hit "T" to activate your chat box. Then type in your message, and hit "ENTER."
Got any Questions? Playing online will add entirely new dimensions to this game for you if you haven't already tried it. I never play Single Player because Online is WAY TOO FUN!
