All CTD's are bad. I need more info to be able to begin trying to help.

    What turn are you at?

What is happening in-game when the CTD occurs?

Can you load a savegame and get past the CTD, or does it occur each time at the same point?

Are you playing your game with the -show_err startup option being used in the RTRPE desktop shortcut? Basically, you haven't messed with the shortcut that was placed on your desktop by the RTRPE v1.8 full installer?

If you are using the -show_err option, is the game engine reporting any error messages when it crashes?

Are you trying to use any other mods with your RTRPE v1.8 install?

Also, realize that a newer v1.9 was released for RTRPE and changes within it may have already fixed your problem. You could try loading a separate copy of RTRPE v1.9 and load your savegame, and if you can get past the CTD, save your game and move it to your RTRPE v1.8 install, or try continuing to play it with the new v1.9 release. Just be sure to keep a backup copy of the savegame file, in case it does not work and makes the savegame file unloadable with RTRPE v1.8. Changes contained in the v1.9 build may make it non-savegame compatible.

Also, if you have a savegame file from early in your game, try loading this earlier savegame file and see if you still get the CTD. It may be caused by a corrupted savegame file.

Well, this may really sound off the wall, but if you wouldn't mind, try this.
Go back into the saved game, and if you're building units anywhere in any city, cancel them all and then see if you can get past the CTD. We're having a random issue with RS where a few people run into a CTD like this, and one of the players discovered that creating units in a town\city whilst upgrading the building where the units are created was causing an issue. In each case, the building had '1' turn left for it's creation. He just cancelled all the units, and then no CTD.

I have never heard or read of such a thing, but it might be worth a try.

Very interesting info. Thanks for sharing. This might be the source for several people's problems.
