    Default Immortal Characters?

I read a thread on this a while back in here, and was wondering where the files are located to change this, and what to change about them and whatnot. I'd be content with immortalizing just one family member, since he's the faction heir, and 57 years old, but has also reached the highest chivalry rating, a bunch of stars in command, and a gold shevron. The King isn't nearly as great as the Prince, but as soon as the King dies and he gets the throne, he'll die as well! So if any one could help, it's be greatly appreciated.

Oh, and I apologize in advance if this isn't the right place for this thread.

hmm i dont no how to make him fully immortal but you could make him live longer i rekon if you found something in the game files that controled his age. should be stright forward and easy enough to find. ill have a look see what i can find tonight if nobody comes up with an answer - but im sure the great community on here that knows a little more about this than me; will give you a more accurate answer

thanks, I'll looks into it as well. Don't know why I haven't yet. Well, I kinda did, but didn't really find anything. Guess I can just look further into it....... Even though I don't really know exactly where to look except for that preference .cfg file in the M2TW File, and I don't think it's in there.

You will first need to unpack your data files, if you have not already done so. After patch 1.1 or 1.2, there should be a "tools" folder in your Medieval 2 folder. Check the readme found there for instructions.

You may wish to create a mod folder or simply use the io file_first option. Check these threads:

    io file_first: http://www.twcenter.net/forums/showthread.php?t=70942
    Mod folder: http://www.twcenter.net/forums/showthread.php?t=75819

The file you need to edit is desc_campaign_db.xml. Try increasing the "max_age_before_death uint" number. This is a global setting, so all characters in the game will be affected equally. I'm not aware of any way to modify an individual character's age or aging rate once the game is underway.

i found the file finally. however after i edited the file descr_campaign_db.xml to max age 999 and old age 990 my leader and generals still died at the same rate as it did before i edited the file. is there something i'm missing here?

Med2 need to know, that it should use the extern files.
Adding --io.file_first (with blank) in the command line of your shortcut will do the trick.
And as mentioned you need to star a new campaign.

wow, thanks Gundug.... hopefully I'm compitent enough to do this.

Sorry for the double post, but it's not letting me edit for some odd reason.

Anyway, so I've went in and changed max_age_before_death uint" number, and the age in which a son reaches manhood, just so I can tell if it worked or not. And I don't think it did, since I've got two sons that have just passed the age of 13 and nothing happened. So, maybe I did something wrong? I saved and everything...

i think in order for the changes to take place you need to start a new campaign.

oh, I'm sorry Trajan, won't happen again.

But anyway, like I posted above, I did it and everything, didn't think it worked, (probably because of what the always-helpfull J@mes said above, though) and then tried going into a battle... but it didn't work. As soon as the progress bar was full, it said an error with an uknown source had occured, and it crashed. I thought it would be the things I changed with the characters, so I put it back to normal.... same thing. So, I tried deleting everything I unpacked (I went in tools and clicked "unpack_all" of course) that was in the data file. Thank God, I was able to battle again. So.... any suggestions on what I did wrong? Hehe...

You only need to delete TWO of the unpacked files: descr_geography_new.txt and one more...can't remember the name of that file though. Those were the ones that were crashing your game. If you check inside the Tools subfolder of your MTW2 folder (same one you found the unpacker), you'll see a readme. Read it, the name of the files you need to delete after unpacking the files is there.
