Are there any new units or faction specific buildings that make one particular faction stand out above the rest? Maybe there is a geographical advantage to be gained. Im asking for a recommendation.

There definately are plusses and minuses to the starting positions. Some factions have it tough, others have it easy.
If you want an advantage, try Kiev. They have room to expand and the ability to launch attacks on important locations.

Thanks but Kiev has poor militia and id like to be able to defend my cities with just militia and good strategy.
Man I'm having tons of fun as Spain. I'm in the process of driving out the Moors, have a few vulnerable spots with a massive returning Jihad that might pop up at anytime and an uneasy peace with the Portuguese. Things are hanging on a thin line. Only thing is the units seem closer to vanilla than they used to with Burrek's varied textures. And I kinda miss them being yellow. But economy is tight, with all of it being focused on the war effort currently. Great fun.
Kiev is very enjoyable to play, sorry this mod don't have Mongols to fight against.
I am having a good bit of fun with England, always fun securing the islands first and then trying to spread outward.
I also trying Byzantines, but am struggling.
Byzantines are right in the thick of things, and a difficult start
The quickest route may not always be the most fun.

I'm playing a game as the Danes right now. They have a great miltia unit that I'm using to cover my towns right now. (I forget what the unit's called but they're weapon is a sword attached to a pole with pretty good defense especially for a miltia unit.) They also get crossbow miltia.
In my game I went after the Germans and took they're land but now I'm in the middle of Europe with the English, French, Milanese, Venetians, Hungarian, and the Polish around me so I'm having a great time with the strategy.
I think Scotland is really interesting and fun, alot of cool units and rebel provinces around them.
We march, march, marchwe fight, fight, fightwe die, die, diewe rule!!!
I play the
First time I try out a muslim faction (counting vanilla and all mods), but it's interesting - mostly cause of the new mechanics of this mod - I like it ...
I must say, this keeps me pretty much occupied to the extreme :o)
Mongols and Timurids both appear at the appropriate time. You'll notice because the Khwarezmians will be crying for help.

two great factions to play with because of their central location and powerful neighbors are Denmark and Venice... plus both have very good unit selections.
I'm having an absolute blast with the Abbassids. They are in an interesting starting postion. Right around Bagdad with all the other Islamic factions surrounding. So, if you play nice, it's a nice easy start. You can grab some rebels, and when you get rich (Oh, and you will!) you can start buying land from the Syrians.
If you play mean, well...have fun with the islamic world AND the catholic world hating you.
Currently, I'm on turn 200 with 16 territories. I broke my own 5 regions/100 turn rule, but that's because I think the Mongols are on the way. (I don't really know for sure... I never really looked it up, because I want it to be a suprise. Realistically, the Mongols caught alot of factions with thier pants down) Although I'm building a strong military, I'm compensating for a possible devestating invasion.
I have to say, this is the longest I've stuck around with one faction, so that tells you something!
I love this game.
Well... in 2.0 I play Kiev. Great fun and a horrible war against die Hungarian. In 1.9.8 I played the English and than Aegyptia... Two strong and good factions I suppose
Either England or the Scots also serve well for a short "player defined" game when there's not enough time to play a standard short campaign and you're not in the mood to set up a saved game to come back to later (which I personally hate doing).
The conquest of the isles makes for a good, single sitting, campaign.
Spain is turning out to be pretty fun as well. I allied with the Portugese right off the bat declared a crusade or Cordoba. Basically took the iberian peninsula and Africa now I have way too much money and am going to carve a path right through Italy just cause I'm tired of my pope always asking me to cease hostilities.
The quickest route may not always be the most fun.

I am playing as the Byzantines, they are very hard and I struggle to get money.
They are also very fun as well, and the merc system gives them a much needed boost!
Under the patronage of Rhah and brother of eventhorizen.
WaZaaa!!!
I'll have ter say that I'm with infernocanuck (spelled it right this time round) all the way
!!! Go Abbasids!
