    Default greece's colonies

    greece had many trading posts scattered around the mediterranean and the black sea, but in SPQR or any RTW mod and vanilla version it isn't possible to have scattered lands because of the 'distance to capital' thingy.

    if you're too far away of your capital, surrouned by neutral/hostile neighbours, it isn't possible to hold that city without a full stack, low tax and/or monthly games or so. that way you loose instead of gain money.

    so my suggestion is, disable the 'distance to capital' thingy that influences your settlement's happiness so the greeks can have cities all over the map that actually have a positive effect on their economy (less soldiers to guard the town, new trading lines and new rich/wealthy towns).
    only for the greeks of course.

    And why not for the Carthaginians?

    greek colonies were much more scattered than carthaginian lands, that were pretty much centered in north africa, east iberia, corsica, sardinia and west sicilia.

    this is a map of around 200BC : http://xenohistorian.faithweb.com/worldhis/map29.gif

    red = greeks
    purple = carthage (actually phoenician)
    yellow = etruscans

    Disabling 'distance to capital' could have unpleasant effects... in fact, it is a balancing factor: it assures the larger empires are not exceedingly stronger than smaller ones. Distance to capital raises your costs (by requiring more garrisons in your cities) and greatly cut your income (lower taxes, but, most of all, increased corruption). In this way, an empire with 20 cities, all else being equal, is not twice stronger than an empire with 10 cities. Expansion is slowered and small factions can resist more.

    If the distance to capital were removed, Greeks (human or AI) would dominate the map very soon, spawing full stacks everywhere. Some stacks of hoplites marching towards Italy would be quite a nightmare!

    you might be right, but isn't possible to at least lower the effect of 'distance to capital'?

    Distance from capital is one thing that makes the mod more realistic which is whole purpose with SPQR.

    I don't know. It's a balancing issue: we should see what happens when a faction gets quite large, and I am still in my early campaign in SPQR, so I cannot form a good judgement.
    The problem is that if the 'distance to capital' effect is too low, the first faction that gets big enough has won for sure (unless all the others ally against it, but this never happens in TW :hmmm. This would be bad if that faction is an AI , but it would be bad for you too, because after you realize that the computer cannot stop you anymore, the campaign will become boring.

    Anyway I don't think it is really necessary to disable the distance penalty; SPQR adds happiness effects to many buildings (academies, walls, even roads) and it seems that you can keep unrest under control by building the proper structures.

    Its definitely not worth it, because SPQR is made to play romans, and removing the distance to capital would make the campaign WAY too easy for Rome.

    lol Guys you are showing your novice knowledge. This is Hardcoded and If possible it would be in alot of mods already. You will find most of the Mod teams here including myself have thought of doing everything under the sun and alot wasnt possible due to hardcoded limits.

    So its a MOOT point, isnt it?

    just do what i do and center your capital...for instance: if you own italy, corsica/sardinia, sicily, and then you take tarraco, valencia and palma (balearic is.) just move your capital to cors./sard....this is not against house rules (or, if it is i have not read it anywhere)...for me it is just another form of micromanagement and really helps w/ keeping peace in far-flung spain...thx, hannibeau

    Lt, do you have a houserule never to move your capital from Arretium and eventually Rome?

    It would be a good addition to make the game a little harder( I already use it).
