don't be such an elitist ass. people need help so they ask. So what if they didn't read the FAQ, help them out and then say "in the future check the FAQ out first". Are they causing any physical or emotional harm to you? No. You just get a kick out of sneering at people.

Don't carry your feelings on your shoulder, noob.

    Hi Poisoner & redalibi,

there is really no need to call somebody here a noob or an ass!
I would suggest that you choose your words more carefully the next time...

well, some people should read the FAQ first, but the majority of threads here is quite constructive.
Also I don't mind much when someone asks for something that was already discussed. Not all people can look through all the threads to find an answer.

I completly agree and what if there is a question that is not answered in the FAQ or other threads? This topic should be locked tbh

Refrain from trolling.flaming each other please. Any more and this thread will be closed, as it is also close to going nowhere in terms of discussion.

    Hader

The forum moderators for this mod should be taking care of anything here that they feel is spam to the forum, or unecessary. Either they do not mind the threads or they are not really paying much attention. Either way its their choice.

Well if you close it could you make it a sticky? Seriously not to troll Hader, but some people need it. I mean read a few pages back and you will see the drop of quality.

I will not sticky it, if the forum leader(s) want it stickied then they may. I will only close this thread if it gets out of hand though.

I personally have found the search function rather unreliable most of the time, since it never really brings up exactly what Im looking for, only something with the word that I want in it. Besides, its always better to help someone then yell at them....

i think most of the threads are pretty interesting and when your new it can be really hard to find the right place to look or post something so i dont mind them. there are however about 498,004 threads about how annoying the pope is in MTW2 i swear every other post is "then he told me to cease hostilities but then he excomunicated me and then he did this and..."

I thought long and hard about sticking my proverbial oar in the water on this one because responding can be somewhat like tap dancing in a minefield.

Disclaimer: This post is not intended as a flame or a troll. It is not intended to chastise, belittle, disrespect, inflame or otherwise offend any individual. It is simply food for thought. As with all free advice, it is potentially worth every cent one pays for it.

Warning: Long, rambling philosophical post follows...

Before joining any online community, I tend to lurk for a while to assess the members thereof. I try to answer the question: Do I want to simply make use of the knowledge and material published by this community or do I want to join and, perhaps in some small way, contribute to it and help all of us to grow?

I can say unequivocally that one of the biggest red flags for me is the perjorative use of the term "noob".

I say this because none of us sprang from the womb as fully functional modders, or even with the ability to construct a useful search string. All of us were "noobs" at some point (even if we were "noobs" when dinosaurs roamed the earth). One of the key indicators, for me at least, of the character of a community is the way it treats newcomers.

Newcomers come in many flavors. There are folks who are new to gaming, new to this particular game, new to forums and their etiquette, new to twcenter.net, new to mods in general, and new to this mod in particular. Heck, I can still remember the feeling of awe I experienced the first time I discovered mods. "You mean I can actually change the game?" followed quickly by "They do this for free?!?!?" I can remember it because I still regard accomplished modders with the same awe and respect.

Yes, there are "noobs" who are obviously too lazy to do their own homework. Those are, in my experience (at least in this community), few and far between, deserving of a certain amount of the rough edge of the collective tongue. More often, though, they are folks who, like me on occasion, are completely baffled by their search results and just need to be pointed in the right direction. Unlike me (I must have at least a bit of the masochist in me), they are unwilling/unable to invest an hour or two digging around for an answer. There are compelling reasons to be polite, friendly and helpful in responding to them.

First, an increasing number of "noob" posts indicates that the mod and its creator(s) (King Kong, in this case) are well thought of and word of the mod is getting around. "Hey, you've GOT to play Stainless Steel!" This is a good thing, as it's likely to keep the modder(s) (KK) interested and turning out superior content. This is a prime example of that valued and ephemeral phenomenon called "word of mouth advertising" and it is golden. One of the first maxims I learned in the retail business years ago is: "A happy customer will tell a friend. An unhappy customer will tell ten friends." King Kong has worked too hard, and done such top notch work, that it would be a shame if people were turned off by an unwelcoming community. That's disrespecting King Kong and his work. This applies to any community. I've seen posts in forums for other games of "yeah the mod's great, but the people on the forum suck!". Interest, other than from hard core fanatic followers, soon dies out and often the mod with it. We are all, in essence, ambassadors for Stainless Steel.

Second, and equally important, the "noob" you help out today may become a valued asset in the community tomorrow. Shaeffer comes immediately to mind of late in the SS community. Here's a self-proclaimed noob who has rolled up his sleeves and dug in to add value, even if he has to do OJT to do it. That excites me. That shows me the mettle of this community. There are many others the lack of whose contributions would, in one measure or another, lessen things for us all. Don't scare off the "noob" who might otherwise go on to create a masterpiece like Stainless Steel for M3TW or R2TW (or whatever the next incarnation of the TW series may be).

I now step off my soapbox and prostrate myself in preparation for a potential pelting...

    How true.

It also follows that it is impossible to stop asses from being asses, thats why they are called asses.

Well done aduellist. You hit the nail on the head with that one.

Everyone was a noob once, Poisoner, even you. Threads like this do nothing but harm the community.
