Generally you just let yourself get destroyed by the Macedonians on the Greek mainland. Let the Romans take Syracuse. Let your other provinces get captured.
Once your citizens have been enslaved by the Romans they will make very good teachers and doctors for centuries to come.
I think that is a good rough historical guide to playing the Greeks accurately.![]()

spartans weak??? 1000 of them destroyed 1 carthaginian army and crippled hannibals killing him and all his elaphants aswell as loads of the infantry.
Ok they are strong, but not as strong as they should be.
Playing as Roman, I can surrond and destroy a unit of Spartans with just three hastati with no experience. A unit of Spartans costs 1220 of recruitment and 550 of upkeep; hastati cost 350, upkeep 110 (3 hastati = 1050 recruitment, 330 upkeep). You can see that killing a Spartan with 3 hastati is quite a good deal.
Spartans just seem to cost too much considering their strength; or if you want they are too weak considering their cost.
Another example: Spartans are helpless against an imperial first cohort: but both have the same recruitment cost, and first cohort actually has a lower upkeep (480 against 550)!
You can try yourselft in custom battles. They just aren't worth their cost!
Maybe it could be good to give them 3 hp... Bull Warriors, bastarnae and gladiators have 3hp, Spartans should have no less!
But I don't know what lt1956 thinks about that, maybe he underpowered Spartans on purpose.

playing another faction besides the Romans might be hard at first but it'll get easier... maybe too easy. you might get bored later. Kinda like what happens with vanilla.
In 6.4 they have 3 HP, it was missed in the last release.
Also remember SPQR isnt about upkeep and price. Because its designed for Single Player not MP and the only way you can play SPQR mp is over a LAN. So really you will find the costs for most of the units in SP are cheap for the AI but the player pays more for Roman, because of the challenge.
No problem. The cost of the spartan doesnt bother the AI much since it can only be recruited in 2 places. The AI normally only builds 1 unit at a time unless in serious trouble and then I have seen it build more than one unit. Too bad the AI didnt use the 0 turn as good as the player, but then again maybe its good it doesnt as it could be too many battles. lol
Maybe that isn't really a bad thing. I suspect that if the AI were to use massively the 0 turn recruitment, it could easily deplete its population. That's exactly what happened in vanilla with huge settings (vh/vh): Gauls and Germans were never able to develop their settlements beyond villages, because they recruited the population faster than it could grow.
Indeed I was worried this thing could easily happen in SQPR due to 0 turn, and what you say is of great comfort!![]()
a 1000 spartans ummm you are not making entire armies of spartans are you?
noin one of the towns you get as greece the one in sicily i think its got a garisson of bout 1000
