Default Value of a Port on a closed sea?

I'm curious if anyone knows who a Port built in...say..Basra, or on the Caspain Sea or the Gulf of Suez would actually trade with. Only other ports that are actually on that same Sea or does trade "navigate" off the map (as long as you have a trading partner anywhere else) ?

I'm quite certain port trade is restricted to the sea. So, on the smaller bodies of water, it's only worthwhile if you have some other port to connect to (or will soon be able to.)

Even if you have two territories on the same body of water, building a port in both territories will generate you trade income you wouldn't get otherwise. I would recoomend, however, that you aquire the territories first and build the ports second, so you don't end up with a single port that connects, well, nowhere.

OK...thanks. That must certainly be how it works for the Caspian Sea but it still elaves me wondering about the Gulf of Suez and the Arabian Gulf. Both do lead to the sea in the real world but not on the game map. Having never built a port on either before, I just don't know if trade will get to it by going off the map.

I'm playing as Egypt and I can tell you that building ports in the Gulf of Suez / Red Sea is actually useful. Road trade routes only trade to adjacent provinces, but the sea trade allows you to trade, for example, from Cairo to some of the provinces on the western parts of the Arabian peninsula. It also allows you trade from provinces along the Nile to provinces across the Red Sea, etc. I'm sure the Caspian Sea and Persian Gulf are similar.

I believe you can make rivers part of the trade route, (must make them navigablke rivers though) so that inland seas can trace atrade route along that river to distant province and trade between the two.

Navigable rivers are neat ideas. Anyone know how they look in battle though?

It's too bad you can't make bridges work for them.

For those who don't know, navigable rivers are made by carving a 1 tile sea area into the region.

Ive seen them on a RTW mod, or rather an add on to one, that had major nav rivers, and they looked ok in battlefield mode.

however, since youve gone with an income per building rather than trade route, its not high on my list of things id like to add on!!, instead im going to expand on that concept of buildings increasing revenue, Chruch tiths, gate tolls here i come!.

the only problem/advanatge with them is that you can funnel the AI with its pathfinding, as the become a barrier or funnel to AI movement, otoh hand river borne raiding is a lot of fun!!.

then we could make sea tiles untill you need a river crossing, and there you can put a river tile that you can cross.... obviously if possible!!!!

    Good point.

At that point the river becomes unnavigable though and trade routes won't continue.

Especially since there aren't any rivers linking the major seas, I think I'll leave that until later on in the future. Unless someone comes around and wants to take up the slack on the map modification.
