    Default RTW modding, WTF?!?!

    i thought i would mod some of the unit names in data/text/export_units, goody i can have some realsitic sounding units. then i edited the slingers to do more damage which they would have back then. the game crashed when i tried a custom battel why?
    export_units?
    or
    edu?
    do i need a modswitch or an io file_first?

    Please, when posting, make your thread title more useful to future searchers (and present browsers) of the forum.

    Further, when you have coded something and it causes an error it is best to copy the excerpt of code to the thread. It is hard to tell where an error is without seeing the code.

    Editing an entry in the EU file can do no harm as long as you do not mess with the tags; changing elements in an EDU unit entry however can cause a range of problems.

    you've probably changed the wrong parts.
    let me give you an example of how to change the name of the roman hastati to something else:

    export_descr_unit.txt - UNTOUCHED! don't edit here
    descr_model_battle.txt - NO touching for what we want to do!
    text\export_units.txt - here we finally edit (and ONLY here) this:

    Hardy\nSapping Ability\n\nHastati are among the younger men in an early Republican Legion, and form the front line in any battle.     and for example change it to this:

    this will change the description and name in the interface (and battle map) of hastati.

    export_descr_unit.txt - edit only here for attributes.

    now you can edit the "stat_pri" and if necessary the "stat_sec" lines. description of the parameters are in the header of the file, the ; comments.

    should work as long as in the descr_model_battle.txt the soldier "barb_slinger" exists.
    try one by one, and only change one soldier at a time. then test each time with rome.

    just don't edit anything in the model battle and export unit
