I've been perusing around here lately and every band I notice is a pop band or some emo whiney band or a radiohead-esque band or oldies. Doesn't anyone listen to Fear Factory or Cannibal Corpse anymore. I was playing M2 and listening to Carcass, Demons and Wizards, and Emperor one day... it was great. I just ask 'cause it doesn't seem like there's anyone talking about the good old metal anywhere on here.

well that's true... I did love the 80's metal, but I have no record stores anywhere near me now that I moved out of Boston and I figure with everyone talking about music I would have found one person at least that could talk about metal with on here from somewhere in the world!

I love lots of genres but metal would be my favorite. As for metal not being what it use to be is crap. There are amazing bands out there in the metal scene.

My top ten metal bands would be:
    1. Opeth
    2. Death
    3. Agalloch
    4. Emperor
    5. Isis
    6. Dillinger Escape Plan
    7. Converge
    8. Poison the Well
    9. Necrophagist
    10. Orphaned Land

Loads of other notable entries to like Refused, Nile, Cave In, Entombed, Unearth, Meshuggah, My Dying Bride, Mastodon, Massacre,

Overall I think metal was evolved into a more educated style. Agalloch being the best example there.

    There's my 2 cents anyway.

Unlike the '80s, there are now several sub-genres of metal. I personally enjoy symphonic/melodic metal with long and amazing solos, but there are tons out there. Progressive metal - ie dream theater, black metal like Emperor, speed, thrash, nu, folk metal. It goes on....
So when you ask 'if anyone still listens to metal', the answer is yes, but remember there are MANY different types.

I know, but I dind't want to get too specific since there wasn't any discussion on it anywhere... I'm a fan of the melodic metal when I'm not driving... it makes me sleepy when I drive for some reason (barring thryfing's melodic parts). I really just want a thread that isn't about pop or muse or 70's rock... I'll start one on country later if you want I love all music haha.

Iron Maiden, Bathory, (old) Metallica, Dream Theater, Opeth, Ulver, Candlemass, Celtic Frost, Danzig, Queensryche, Agalloch... some of the best bands ever.

I only have Emperor's first album, wasn't too impressed but I'll give it another listen.

Cannibal Corpse... not for me, to be honest I find most death metal a bit bland.

And I got 2 Empyrium albums today, which I shall listen to later.

The best metal band though, is the horribly underrated Psychotic Waltz. (If Pink Floyd's first album met Iron Maiden, Waltz would be the result)

My problem with Corpse is that I get bored with them quickly... That Emperor album isn't their best... try Anthems to the Welkin at Dusk. It's a lot better. If you don't mind the very saga like black metal go look up some Thryfing and Adorned Brood.

Never been big on Metal. Most seems too superficial to me. There's exceptions, but I far too often feel that half the time the music is heavy pretty much for the sake of being heavy music. The scene seems equally superficial. People go on about metal being true non-conformist music... when the reality is that its just another form of adhering to a scene.

Oh and I cannot stand metal heads who go around raving that their music somehow stands above all others ... Metal has a superiority complex that I cannot bare basically

I do like alternative bands that incorporate Metal here and there -e.g. Alice in Chains, Smashing Pumpkins - or don't play conventional Metal - e.g. Tool, Porcupine Tree, Rage Against the Machine. I just get sick of the tired old riffs; purely pentatonic, soul-less soloing and meaningless lyrics quite a bit of Metal seems to have.

I don't see it that way, but like you said, you don't like it much. It's like if you gave me a cd full of whiney emo songs... I couldn't tell you which band was which but I could tell you every song was about how daddy didn't love me. Considering I went on a 24 hour road trip when I was settling my moving situation and went from Johnny Cash to Carcass to REM to Keith Urban and then Rancid and on from there... I'm not biased against nonmetal, I just hate emo .

There are a lot of bands with meaningful lyrics... don't look to Acid Bath for them... such as Fear Factory, old Machine Head, Nasum, Earth Crisis, Soilent Green, and a few other grind bands are very political; Dillinger has even had meaning sometimes! haha. I'd include some of the black metal bands, but I'd have to find a translator to verify it. There are a lot of melodic metal bands too like Adorned Brood that are heavy as anything at times too. As far always being pentatonic you have to find the bands outside the curve like Meshuggah.

If you don't like it though it will always be hard to find those good bands that aren't on the outer shell of any genre. It took my forever to like country and I only listened to rap a few years before I let country in. Perhaps emo and bands like Muse and Radiohead could be good to me... but like you kind of said, I'm just not that big into that style.

Bring the black box to the altar
Now raise your hands and do the sing
Oh hail Satan, Yes hail Satan
Lay down your swords, the evil star

    It's a black funeral
She was a victim of my Coven

Open the black box to the altar
Her blood is still hot, so let it out

Oh hail Satan, Yes hail Satan
Now drink it, drink, forget that w****

    It's a black funeral
She was a victim of my Coven

And for Stalins Ghost, some metal bands that aren't about being as heavy as possible:

Fates Warning -- Eye to Eye
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xhGQ2cFTioY

    Psychotic Waltz -- Faded

    And for everyone else:

Opeth -- The Grand Conjuration (crap video, but who cares?)

I listen to metal. i listen to a bit from every metal subgenre, but my favourite is thrash metal.

and i don't think there isn't good metal today. there's a ton of good bands, like opeth (the modern metallica), orphaned land, system of a down, children of bodom, dream theater, and many more. also, many old bands are still making good stuff, like iron maiden, megadeth, slayer.

here's an example of excelent modern heavy metal:
    trivium - the crusade.
"Don't part with your illusions. When they are gone, you may still exist, but you have ceased to live." - Mark Twain

"I am against nature. I don't dig nature at all. I think nature is very unnatural. I think the truly natural things are dreams, which nature can't touch with decay." - Bob Dylan

"Faith in God means believing, absolutely, in something with no proof whatsoever. Faith in humanity means believing, absolutely, in something with a huge amount of proof to the contrary. WE are the true believers." - Joss Whedon

I used to watch them in old gymnasium and basement shows. I got tired of them quickly because their early stuff all sounded the same. Revel in My Loss was good though.

haha, I so didn't say they were all good... some of the bands lumped into the genre have good stories... not like, well, ya know "I'm in love with a skater boy" stories... but pagan stories can be good too
