Why is society so sexually oriented?

So I ask, why is our society so sexually driven? I realize it is pleasurable, but I speak from a religious point of view, God does what is in our best interest, and I have faith in his judgment, so why is it people are so obsessive over sex?

Well speaking from an atheist point of view, reproduction is key to our species survivial and apssing on your genes, so we have a very very strong biological to have sex.

Not to mention it's the best fun you can have with no clothes on. Very fun indeed. When i was a virgin i didn't quite get what all the fuss is about, but now i do.

From a religious point of view it must be odd this innnate desire to have lots and lots of sex.

answering from a 15 year old point of view is that we look every where and everything has to do about sex or sexual oriented, in the past sex was a more private subject only talked when the age was right but now even a 5 year old kid can see commercials about a certain product that shows to adults kissing and getting together.And that raises tentations amongst kids of are age and younger

Why are we driven by sex? Probably because it's the single most pleasurable physical experience a human can have, this side of strong drugs. I know we're all different and react to various stimulii in our own individual way, but I think this one is a leveller.

I don't think that we have sex because we conciously want to preserve the species. I believe that we've survived because sex is so pleasurable and nature has piggy-backed along for the ride. Otherwise, why would I, a gay man, think it's the bees-knees - I'm not likely to pass on my genes.

How long do you think any species would last if the only way of procreation included doing something unspeakable with red hot pokers?

yeah its just the genes man-- they want to reproduce themselves so you have desire to reproduce as a normal thing---its one of the most prime functions of life. er THE most.?(nah probably eating and shelter or someting first)

Not so much in my case, I don't particularly care about getting laid, but I can see why sex is so important to society; I think Foucault's History of Sexuality offers a very convincing set of ideas, which are rather complicated, but the books are well worth reading for them. God made sex the most pleasurable thing possible, because He is so awesome. He made us for Him to love, and us to love Him, and He made man and woman to love each other in the same way. Naturally, when we try to deny God's existence and eventually convince ourselves that He isn't there, there is no reason (and frankly, it is impossible) for us to not do what we are tempted to do, and Satan will of course tempt us with the most pleasurable and sacred thing, and thus he is hurting God in the most harmful way, by wrecking the whole God-given system of marriage, by making us thinks sex is good in itself.

Sex on earth is to give us a tiny picture of what Heaven is, when we are married to Jesus. I don't know how it will work exactly, but I'm absolutely certain that it's going to be similar to sex but infinitely better. If God showed us exactly what Heaven was going to be like before we died, it would completely ruin our lives on earth, because the longing to be there would be too great for us to do anything here but desire heaven.

this is why young people are so screwed up. Sex is not just this great act, but it has responsabilities along with it. We have so many young people pregnant who arent willing to raise children. I mean sex isnt the greatest part of a relationship and in some cases its the worst thing to do.

i think what needs to be done is a great shaking and going HELLO?! WHY DO YOU THINK THERES SO MANY DISEASES EVERYWHERE? IF YOUR NOT WILLING TO TAKE CARE OF A CHILD THAN DONT DO IT!!

That doesnt really answer the question, and even if God is there that doesnt stop people from yielding to temptation, Ted Haggard, Judus, Molester Priests etc. There are certain very hard drugs which i havent done but ive heard are better than sex, i suppose god gave us those to.

Again, I prefer the Foucault theory - it was a means of control, in the end; sex as power, or manifestation of power. That is a massive simplification, but a not too awful summary.

Because of the knowledge economy. Sex has never, ever been a dirty little secret; churches encouraged full, frank, and complete - highly detailed, in fact - confessions; psychoanalysts did the same; society as a whole has, rather than concealing sex and talk thereof, encouraged it, for the last 300 years or more.
