    Default age of atheists

and theists--- just an idea--- I was wondering if any of our resident atheists are older than 40 , if not are any of our theists I think the ages may show something about how beliefs go with age.---not necessarily true but its worth trying out

I am 28 and ardently theistic(leets not discuss the particulars if you believe in any kind of god or god like thing then you can classify yourself a theist-- atheists acknowledge no god or spirit (i guess)-- just for the purposes of this test keept classification small

Well I would look at my Grandma as a good indication of this. When she was young she didn't really have any choice in the matter. She wasn't stupid as such but when you have been brought up with something and know no difference then you will see difference as odd and abnormal.

She died a year ago and it was only towards her end that she really understood my way of thinking. We had some excellent conversations on religion, faith and philosophy. As far as I was ever concerned it made her happy so why change that?

I would like very much to believe she got what she wanted (being in heaven with her lord) but I personally doubt it. It gave her a strength that I already have and so I have no need for a similar belief system.

    20 and atheist.

Christianity's values are good to follow and it is a religion that teachs peace and friendship. Even if (as you say) doesn't exist, it is good to follow. So don't mess us with your atheist ********.

agreed, but you have to really cherry pick the good out of the bible to do that and what is good is subjective already but yeah, people who follow only jesus' example will be good people but y'know what? they probably wont be very succesful businessmen and very few people, even amongst devout christians, will want their sons or daughters to be poor and meek and to always turn the other cheeck. Its hard to balance christianity with the realities of a capitalistic, modern society.

Oh yeah, I'm almost 20 and an agnostic/skeptic with a few atheistic streaks.

erm, im only 18 but my parents are both atheists (they just dont post on here) there have been atheists for aslong as religion has been around. the reason there are perhaps more now is because we dont allow religion to have as big a say in running things anymore. its the same reason there are less royalists now.

27 and officially apostate and agnostic since I was about 13yo here (from about the time I stepped out of the church on the day of my confirmation)
and while I could come back to the Church, it wouldn't be for God, but for the Church itself: I can relate to Maurras' "I'm an Atheist, but I'm a Catholic". Yes, I do have this rightist strain hidden deep into my leftist self. Everybody has (or viceversa)

I doubt this thread will prove much. There is probably nobody over 40 and nobody under 10 that visits these forums (a guess that can't be far wrong). Within that group of people most are also probably of a certain social class which in most first world countries is open to the ideas of atheism disproportionally so compared to other social groups.

I also think that there are of course going to be more older people who are religious simply because that is the way they were brought up and they didn't know any better (unless they were very well educated).

In terms of the young, the ideas of beliefs being relative to age also falls down. Many young people have their parents beliefs forced on them at an age when they can't make up their own opinion about such important matters.

In short the idea won't show anything scientific or profoundly interesting.

    But what the hell.

21, atheist (well technically agnostic but my definition of god is greatly different from the general accepted concept)

17, and a theist. Both of my parents (their in their mid 40s) are atheists/agnostic). My maternal grandparents are Christians, but my paternal grandfather is an atheist; I don't know about my paternal grandmother because she died a few months after I was born.

This thread will show little or nothing, if anything because of the fading influence of religion on youth. Back in my parent's day all their parents were Church of England Christian, they had mass before each school day and all the upper-school children were made to go to sunday school.
Nowadays only a few schools even have any mass at all, whereas only about half have prayers. The parents are more loosly religious if at all, so obviously the latest generation is going to be more likely to be atheist then theist compared to the older ones.

I've lived through 17 winters and 16 summers to this day.

I've been a atheist and philosopher for as long as I can remember, occasionally slipping into pagan beliefs (mostly because of a fascination with Norse culture rather than spirituality).

I really don't care for all of these would-be inquisitor theists who opportunistically bash heathen atheists whenever the occasion should arise (this goes to you as well, GiorgioIII).

I take more or less the same view on atheists. I'm not forcing them to convert; it's their own choice. If they wish to convert, then fine with me, peace be upon them.
