is it best to wait for republic or imperial legions before i try and invade (same goes for gauls) because there all getting to be a pain because hastati dont do well against their axemen and principes can only just hold them off.

Wait for Republic legions for Gaul and Imperial for Germany. By the time you get Republic legions, you should have better units for each type (skirmishing, cavalry, ranged, garrison).

try beating Carthage, the spanish rebels, greece and Macedon with premarian units. thats how im planning on doing things, to keep it historical
