Why does it seem that you can rarely have a very good discussion on religion without it turning into a "My belief is better than yours!" thread?

I'm Christian, but would like to hear some things about other peoples' beliefs.

Yet whenever I ask, the first answer, and maybe more, are very interesting, but then you see the Atheist/Christian/Whatever that flames the others belief, which leads to twenty pages of pure "I'm right you're wrong."

Why has it gotten to this point?

Could I get some general info about the beliefs of some of the people here?

I don't want to start anything, I just want to hear things about them from people that follow it.

Just general knowledge and what you do in the religion.

I'm not sure how bad it is here, but on other threads, I got flamed nearly 120 times by Atheists for following a religion. The thread was about 320 pages (Creationism or Evolution) it stayed on topic for a few pages before turning into a flame fest.

I'd also like to hear some about Atheism (Since most of what I hear from them is, "How can you believe that ****! You must be stupid!"

Thank you for any and all opinions given.

    It's because religious beliefs are:
    1. So personal. Everyone has their own and holds them close to their heart.

    2. Religious beliefs are not math equations or scientifically observable phenomena, but are highly subjective interpretations of certain holy men combined with personal observations/biases (not meant in that way).

yeah its tough for people to seperate themselves from a discussion which basically involves the most deeply held and personal thoughts --- it gets incited by the fact that people take attacks on the belief as attacks on themselves since you are entirely your belief in alot of cases

Well its nearly impossible to actually argue religion. People hold views that would normally be seen as insane, but as they hold religious connotations they are expected to be protect by a velvet glove. Not saying that having insane views is wrong, just that other people often get stressed because they fell they are fighting insanity, which in all likely hood they are.

Now for my own personal insane views I'm something of an Eastern Deist. I see 'God" as a transcendental being that is the force behind all things. I am part of this force, you are, so is every spec of dirt in this universe. God is the livingness behind the universe itself.

In my own personal religion I try to connect to God through meditation and use of hallucinogenic drugs. Ultimately my chief belief is to continually enhance my mind, body, and spirit, loving everything along the way. Its all rather fulfilling.

How has it gotten to this point?

My friend it's been at that point for pretty much the last thousand years...lol...religious strife has been behind so much hate, destruction, and death throughout all of time. So, truthfully, if you answer that question you might be able to solve all of humanity's problems.

Back on subject...I know what you mean. Any time there's a thread involving religion it just turns into a free for all. Some people take personally and some don't.

Personally I used to call myself a Atheist or non-believer but at the root of it all I think I want to believe in something, it's a lonely feeling trying to accept that there's NOTHING.

IMO religion has become corrupt - no matter which belief system it is. There's no way to avoid it and that's why I've somewhat created my own beliefs - and IMO those are the best kind: when you can look deep inside yourself and identify what YOU really want to believe.

I agree that it didn't take too long to become corrupt but I do believe that all religions at least started with good intentions in mind

Many people are immature and cannot debate sensitive subjects with vigor, while remaining civil.

Yet whenever I ask, the first answer, and maybe more, are very interesting, but then you see the Atheist/Christian/Whatever that flames the others belief, which leads to twenty pages of pure "I'm right you're wrong."
This is not nec. a flame. Many of the threads on this site are very well meant for dissagreement. A debate over the existence of god or evolution will have two sides presenting their evidence and arguments and then assessing the opposition's. This is how debates work,

I do understand that many devolve into flamewars though.

There have also been MANY threads on information about religions. There is a, Hindu, Muslim, Orthodox Christianity, and Two Buddhism threads at last count(one By Me,). These are not debate but discussion threads.

Also there have been a ton of these, "post your beliefs" threads, and this is much of a repeat.

The flow of time is always cruel... its speed seems different for each person, but no one can change it... A thing that does not change with time is a memory of younger days...

He who joyfully marches to music rank and file, has already earned my contempt. He has been given a large brain by mistake, since for him the spinal cord would surely suffice. This disgrace to civilization should be done away with at once. Heroism at command, how violently I hate all this, how despicable and ignoble war is; I would rather be torn to shreds than be a part of so base an action. It is my conviction that killing under the cloak of war is nothing but an act of murder.

    @war91,

I am not a Christian. Dont be afraid, I wont shot you.
    I just want to say:
please forgive those people who don’t understand you and your good purpose.
All you need to do is listening (me too) and let them talk.

Thank you for all the replies!

And I wish that, just once, I could make a thread and actually have it in the right place.
