Default A new fan gives his first impressions

Hello all, I just wanted to say that I have been trying the SPQR mod these last days and I am really amazed. I have been playing ROME since its publishing and I couldn't believe such things were possible... to combat waves after waves of barbarians, with each battle involving thousands of men, is something I never enjoyed in this game before.
It reminds me of Centurion: Defender of Rome (have you ever played it?), you have always to engage your enemies with a full legion, and you must be careful not to exhaust your provinces' manpower!
Thank you lt1956 and co-modders for this masterpiece.

BTW, I saw just this morning the triumphal arc of Constantine, near the Coliseum. There are several fine engravings of people, many of them soldiers, wearing cloaks. On some of them is visible the lorica segmenta. Sadly, the Coliseum has been stripped of all its statues and artwork, there was nothing to see.

SPQR is Rome:TotalWar at it's best, without a doubt. If you've come to fight, SPQR is the place! The creator, Lt1956, had a wonderfully detailed vision for how the game should have been, and thank God All Mighty that He, gave Lt the technical abilities, patience, and skill, to execute his most excellent vision....

Lt. you can send my fee in the form of a check or money order.... for that fine ringing endorsement!

    PS Welcome to SPQR Teodosio!

Glad you like the Mod, there are ALOT of things that will surprise you later in the game. I suggest reading the Readme, and also house rules and consider using the garrison script. SPQR was the first mod to use it ingame.

Hehe yea the waves of Gauls are famous i lost Genua by siege and Arminium by stupidity, i sent my whole legion out to a counter attack Patavium from Arminium.

A small garrison was to replace the legion not far away with a new govenor stupid as i was i did not build a new garrision right away in the city and gaulish force occupied Arminium.

Going to be fun to retake it

Thank you for advice, yes I have read all the sticky posts and many threads in this forum. I intend to follow house rules too.
Concerning the scripts, I am using them (I can see four turns for each year), but recently I took Lilybeon in Sicily from Carthaginians and no garrison spawned. I sieged and I stormed it the following turn. There were already 6 units inside, maybe that is the reason?

I have the Gauls at the doors of Arminium too... I noticed them too late

    Welcome Teodosio,

SPQR is a great mod indeed and we all gladly share your views and experiences thanks to our mod creator LT

I also played 'Centurion: Defender of Rome' a long time ago and I must confess that It was a superb piece of game for the time I waited decades untill something similar was released in the form of RTW and more specifically SPQR

I visited the triumphal arc of Constantine near the Coliseum when I was in Rome last year... it is indeed full of details and I was gobsmacked to actually step on the same place where such glorious people lived thousands of years ago

right! the garrison script should always spawn full garrisons for large/huge cities and small ones to small towns... I think Lilybeon is already developed to large/huge level at the begining of the game and you should see a full garrison after hitting the end turn button. The script works whenever one of your commanded legions is within a radius of 6 squares from a city even if you did not siege it.

However if you save a game when one of your legions is within that radius and before hitting the end turn button, the next time you load the game and activate the script it won't spawn the garrison because it thinks that the garrison has already been spawned before you saved the game. So you must always make sure to save your games only after you have approached/sieged a city and pressed the end turn button or otherwise the garrison will not spawn... hope it helps

Also never save a game unless it is your turn. If you save after hitting the end turn button, it will mess up the game.

That is good to know, I'll be careful!
Anyway, the garrison script works, I experimented it when I took Syracusae from the Greeks. It works too well maybe: the next turn the garrison sallied to get me! There were already 3 full units of Spartans inside, so it wasn't easy ;-)
I didn't know it was possible to save after pressing end. I will avoid that too!
    Many thanks!

I played Centurion also. The game that CLOSEST comes to it is Legion, and Chariots of War using the MOD I made for the romans.

Basically it uses the same style battles. Its a fun game.
