Default random idea i had ages ago

not forcing you guys to take this idea on or anything but tell me if anything interests you or what else you guys are plannning for the Republic units possibly later on?

the roman army wasnt perfect yet, right? at the start time of 280bc for this mod, not long before this date rome was sacked and around the time of punic wars they did lose a few battles against some celtic tribes settled near the alps. what if the republic units(hastati) etc reflected this kind of vulnerablity, romans should be newbies here, romans relied alot on their numbers to win, till hannibal taught them how to fight REALLY good and use their numbers more skillfully. What if hastati/princeps/triarii etc sizes were raised higher and stats lowered to something of the barbarians level?. Trying to reflect their mortality(they should be beatable!) after this time they are near godlike except for a few clumsy generals or v.special enemy(Persians/parthia etc)

it means you can start off with really big armies but arnt statisticly strong so you need to be careful who you fight early on, and when you reach EL/Imperial your guys are argueably the most skillful in the world.

well u dont know about u, but when i fight the free people in the north of italy with my hastati etc at the end of the battle normally my infantry units have a very low kill death ratio, in fact normally more deaths. i only really win due to my cav and tactics. so for me it seems that the republican units are just about right.

i concur. my hastati get pretty badly chewed up, my principes too, but i dont commit my trarii until i need to, so they suffer less casualties... and my velites are just speed bumps/ phalanx-pinners.

I also concur that what you're saying is in fact the case. I now have a few Republican armies left from when I switched over to the VE Legions, and those old Legions can't even stand up to armies my new ones are beating. I usully take MASSIVE casualties with my Republican armies (making them basically useless), whereas, I can fight on with a VE Legion even after it's faced a couple pretty decent foes.

If this is an indicator, then IMHO the Consular and Imperial Legions will perform exactly as I wanted.....taking some casualties..but winning.

seems you guys are right, i have been taking heavy casulties as the republic today. can i ask if you guys rush to VE or Imperial units or take it slowly? if i wanted in under 30-50 turns i can abandon republic units right away which isnt too realistic or make much sense from a gameplay point of view as its a waste of unit slots to have them in the game. any thoughts?

can the pop requirements be raised for building imperial palace etc?

Generally I like to take my time, what the point in rushing through something I don't enjoy it then.

And no we can't change the population level required for settlement upgrade sizes.

I take my time as well...playing with the RL's for probably 50 yrs or so, before I started building buildings that would allow the VE Legions.
