Default Weird triangles while playing MTW2

    Hey,

I recently formated my Pentium 4 2.5 Ghz, 512 ram (I know it's kinda old lol I'm going to add some ram to it soon). My graphics card is the BFG Tech nvidia Geforce 7600 GS OC which I purchased a few months ago.

After formating the PC, every time that I play MTW2, there are weird colorful moving triangles (artifacts?). However, as far as I remember, there were no such problems prior to formating with the geforce card, or with my old Radeon 9600 card either. So I thought that perhaps the problem would be fixed when I format once more. But no. I've also tried updating the drivers, but it makes no difference.

The problem only exists with MTW2. I tried AoEIII and there are none of these colorful triangles. The new Tomb Raider demo runs perfectly as well.

If you want to see how it looks like, here it is. They move a lot while I move the camera:

    Thanks!

Prior to doing the 2nd format, I tried to fix it by updating MTW2 with the patch, but it makes no difference.

EDIT: I just tried PoP3, and there are the same triangles...

Sounds just like artifacts caused by the overclocking on the card. Try setting it back using RivaTuner if not the Nvidia Control Panel.

Standard question for video card problems: Have you properly updated to the latest drivers?

I did not overclock the card.

Prior to formating, I had tried to fix it by updating the drivers, but it hadn't worked. I just tried the nvidia drivers from Omega, but I couldn't make it work so I uninstalled it. So then I put the new driver from nvidia's website.

For now, all is well in MTW2 and PoP3.

    Thanks

Good if it is working but by overclocking i mean this:

    Geforce 7600 GS OC
OverClocked is what OC stands for.

Check to see if the inside of your case is dusty, if so, turn off the computer, unplug it from the wall, and clean it, the best way to do this is with a can of compressed air.

As Aristocrat said, those artefacts are most often caused by overheating, which is usually caused by either overclocking or bad airflow due to dust.

Yeah, I should clean up the dust inside the pc. Last time I did it was a few months ago, when I got the graphic card and a DVD burner.

Overheating? I haven't really played games these last few weeks due to exams, so I don't think I heated it up a lot.

You think it's bad that I put the pc in a closed place (its section in my desk, which has a small door)?

If the heat can't get out of the space then it's just going to keep getting warmer (up to the hottest source anyway). Unless you have water cooling, putting your case inside a closed space is probably the worst thing you can do, it needs air to cool.

Get a blow dryer or a can of air and clean out the dust, take the pc out of the closed space.

What graphics card do you have? The exact same thing happened to me on my laptop with a Geforce 440 Go. Mine just isn't as bad as yours, so I never tried to fix it. But it looks like a overheating problem, or a driver problem. Have you updated to the latest drivers?

    Yeah, I just did that.
I tried 2 custom battles. During the first battle, triangular portions of the ground were appearing for a split second, then disappearing. But it played fine. During the second one, there were no triangles.

Yesterday it was playing fine at moments.

Glad I'm not alone. It's the BFG Tech Geforce 7600 GS OC. Yeah it has the most recent drivers.

sometimes artifacts are caused by the chipset on the mobo. It happened to me when i first installed the game, i switched my graphics card and it didn't help, so i replaced the mobo and it worked fine.

I still have the latest drivers and all, but it happened again... I shall try Rivatuner. Where do I go to undo the overclocking, if there is any?

EDIT: Ok I found it, and this is what it says:

Core clock: 420 Mhz (ranging from 210 to 630 Mhz)
Memory clock: 275 Mhz (ranging from 140 to 415 Mhz)

The slider is right in the middle for both of them by the way.

So I should diminish it? To what?

Samething happened to my cousin, when he was playing BF2. He looked inside his computer, and finds out that his fan dosent work - so his graphic card was HOT.

I found the solution in a discussion in another forum! I went to Display Properties, then Advanced, then Troubleshoot, and then I unchecked "Enable write combining". All is truly well 'till now! No more triangular flickers in the ground... No more porcupine armies... For those of you who have stumbled upon this page, and who have the same problem, I hope that this helped.

Damn it all to hell! I 've been giving people that advice on three seperate occasions and it didn't help and now it could have been useful and I'm too late!

Interesting, I had the exact same problem. But only once. I just upgraded my video card form a 7800gt to an 8800gts(640mb). I never ran across that problem with the 7800 so I assume it's a video card problem.
"I went to Display Properties, then Advanced, then Troubleshoot, and then I unchecked "Enable write combining". All is truly well 'till now"
So unchecking "Enable write combining" fixed the problem? Is that in any way connected to overheating? Or does this suggest that overheating is NOT related to the problem. I've been monitoring my GPU temp closely and It's almost never gone above 70c.

I had this problem in RTW.

This is what I found in another forum:

"Enable Write Combining: Write Combining is a technique which merges multiple operations into a single read or write, increasing graphics performance. However just like Fast Writes (See BIOS section above), having it enabled may cause problems and exacerbate instabilities on various system configurations. For most people, I recommend ticking 'Enable Write Combining' as it increases performance and should not cause any problems. However if you continually experience crashes, particularly the 'infinite loop' error, you can try unticking this setting to see if things improve."

    http://forums.nvidia.com/lofiversion...hp?t16391.html

I guess write combining is just not compatible with my system.
So I doubt that it has anything to do with overheating...

I had this problem in RTW.
To me, it wasn't only on MT2W or RTW...
