Labour, if only to get rid of those god damn Industrial Relations laws...and because I'm just plain sick of "little Johnny" and his creative versions of events. (Also known as lies).

Edit: Not taking anything away from Howard, he has been good for the country in many ways, but now what he is trying to create is not something I agree with, plus his use of funds is questionable.

    He is...

    A clever prick...

    But a prick none-the-less...

I live in the left-wing heartland, so I find it really hard to imagine someone really following Johnny...

John Howard has done marvals for Australia.
look at the Australian economy before and after he came to power.

He is surely a moral patriot to the Australian people.
I suppose it is natural to hate him as any leader who has been in power for a long time is hated and not appreciated when they are around.

You mean the economy that Keating and the Labor Government reformed and restructured to deliver stellar economic growth? The economic reforms that Howard has been riding on the back of, largely thanks to a resources boom, while neglecting education and infrastructure to the point where schools, universities, training, water supplies and transport are risking further economic growth?

Please don't post unless you know the facts.

He is surely a moral patriot to the Australian people.
That gurgling noise is the rest of your post going down the toilet. Even his supporters would never dare to use "moral" and "John Howard" in the same sentence. This is a man who is widely referred to, derisively, as "Honest Johnny" because of his skill with lies. This is a guy who one of his own party strategists referred to as "that rodent". This is a guy whose own party warned him years ago that his government was seen as "mean and tricky". This is a guy who has lied through his rat-like teeth over Iraq, a manufactured "refugee crisis" and the largest bribes-to-Saddam scandal in the world.

A "moral patriot to the Australian people"? On what planet? Even those who have voted for him in the past did so largely because of tax cuts and a perception that he's kept home interest rates low (as though China and world rates had nothing to do with it). Now they are turning against him in droves. The polls that came out today put Labor a full 20 points in front and Howard's "Preferred Prime Minister" rating at 9 points below Kevin Rudd.

Why? Because the majority of the electorate has realised what the rest of us have known for years - Howard is an opportunistic liar who would sell his grandmother to stay in power.

Wrong and wrong. Generally, Australians use English spelling. The Australian labour movement that gave rise to the modern Australian Labor Party was heavily influenced by Americans, and this was at a time last century when Australians were toying with the idea of adopting American spellings. Those spellings never caught on, but the ALP's name from that period has stuck.

You know whenever you use the phrase 'moral patriot' I become suspicious that we're talking about some sort of degenerate mule ****er.

I've noticed that anyone some of you don't agree with politically is either a 'prick', a 'facist', a 'racist'.

    Just an observation.

I don't know alot about Oz politics but I do know John Howard has been a friend of the United States and for that I thank him from the bottom of my heart.

So you must also have noticed that by calling Howard a "prick" we choose the lesser insult if the three.

Well, America may thank him, but Australia doesn't.

That makes two of us, then. We're the premier economic and military power in South East Asia, it's time we started acting like it, and stopped being America's *****.

I hate how people assume that giving the Unions one iota of power will gut business and ruin the economy. But that's an entirely different issue.

If you haven't guessed, I'm a Labor man, through and through. But if Australia had a Socialist (not Communist!) Party, I'd probably vote for them.

Kind of ontipic, why is the party name 'Labor' though (I presume) the correct way of spelling the word is 'labour'?

Someone from Aus corrected me the other day but didn't explain why.

I'd support Labor though if I could vote. Which hopefully I will be if I follow through on moving.

Firefox spelling check used Labor too, Labour gets a red line under it. I hate that, I want to learn British English but I can's seem to change the language.

I think economy is more into a world mode. All are doing when but when the Chinese economy or so other foreign group goes down they all do.

Its not Howard's plans that caused this if by "economy" you mean stock market. Which is how American politicians use the word.

If you mean economy by high/rising wages compared to inflation, job growth, and low unemployment then he is doing good. Otherwise that economy is only benefiting the rich.
