Do you think sharia law can teach us anything. I feel certain (non-religion related) aspects ought to be adopted, many of them certainly reduce the crime rates but, what do you, the members of the TWC, think of this?
Yes

I don't see how Sharia law is much different than Biblical Old Testament law. In both cases, I think they're either redundant or harmful. In the cases where they make secular sense, they are unnecessary. In the cases where they advocate destructive behaviour, they are harmful.

Shari'ah law is, alongside with Jihad, one of the most bastardized concepts of Islam by the average, ill informed westerner.
Certainly, current commonly accepted Shari'ah law has incorporated many nonsense and cultural backwardness with the passing of centuries, but that's another story. But yes, Shari'ah law has much to offer, and not only regarding crime and punishment. If it is conveniently renewed, that is.

Shariah itself is an Arabic word which means Law in English and every single Muslim country has different law/shariah just like any other countries in the world.
I guess the question should be more specific like 'Can barbaric Saudi laws/shariah teach us anything?'

I tihnk that anything that was invented in the 7th century, especially a system of law/justice/crime-fighting ("Shariaman! To the Rescue!"), should be pretty much ignored...

I don't know anything about the Sharia laws. I've only heard bad things about them. What could they teach us? I'm asking because I'm wondering, not rethorically.

I don't know much about it, so its hard to give a truly informed opinion, but I believe many aspects of it where for cultural rather than religious reasons, and as ever they've been adopted as religious. Also as a set of laws they fitted the situation the people where in. I feel things like than son inheriting all everything from the parents is sensible in the he would then look after the rest of the family, something like that adapted for modern life could work well. As for the punishment methods for crimes, well people always seem to say we should have them so maybe we should for persistent offenders. I think most of it though is out dated and irrelevant.
