Well, I just started playing as Milan and I think like 1exp merchant make about 50 gold-ish/turn. However, the one I have now makes 11. I'm a little confused as I thought they're supposed to make more money.

Well they won't make more cash if your not using them properly.

the more far away the resources are the more money u get
Put them on gold or ivory in timbuktu.
I remember once as the Byzantines I had merchants making over 2k each (they both had 10 finance) with the ivory in the region under Cairo. Forgot what it's called.
If you send your merchants far away though, they may get in trouble running into some of the other factions' top tier merchants. May want to consider sending an assassin or two with them . . .
I've understood that the more you control the same resource, the more profit you will make from it.
You know, I really tried desperately to work this, but I actually agree: comparing the gold value of my Moorish gold merchants (at Timbuktu, of course) in normal M2 vs. LTC, there is no discernable difference in the amount of money they each make. Which is still quite a bit, of course.
I have monopoly over said resource, shouldn't I be getting much more gold than normal? It's a more valuable investment to not build the merchants (or send them after a less valuable resource further east) and instead open mining pits.
What can I do to make the merchants value increase more apparent?
You can have both merchant and mine on a resource i believe.

Yeah, but I am just pointing out that my merchants aren't really getting any bonuses on any of the stuff I send them to beyond normal M2TW. I was under the impression that they had been made more useful, or did you mean instead that normal trade would instead be devalued to make them more important?
