I applied these settings and scanned with Malwarebytes. It found some potentially unwanted program files. But these things didn't solve the problem.

Security software has almost always been active and I have never noticed it doing such things with any drives.

I think you didn't rename it properly. It worked for me. Maybe your Windows fiddles something with extensions.
