It is indeed, the ruins of one of the few hill castles of the Netherlands. It was blown up by the Dutch in 1672 to prevent the French from using it to threaten Maastricht. That didn't stop the French...

Horta it is, well done Muizer.
I mean, there are quite a few clues in that picture.
It's a coastal town and the elevation goes up immediately which could mean volcanic island (not...
Certainly colonial, not quite Spanish though.
A very nice city and definitely worth a visit but not the one in the picture.

Well, no takers so I'll go. It's Dillenburg, ancestral seat of the House of Orange-Nassau, perhaps better known as the Dutch royal family.
As someone from that little finger of the Netherlands that sticks south I can quite confidently say that there is nothing of this kind in the Netherlands.:P Also, this picture just screams "small...
US states were no problem, got them all with more than half the time to spare. The only struggle was spelling a certain state really.:P Mexico I did terribly on as I only got 7, I missed a few that I...

It's quite clearly a shield volcano caldera Sept.:P I didn't quite guess desert myself either, volcanos can be quite desolate places...
It's the Emi Koussi caldera. The Emi Koussi is apparently the highest mountain in the Sahara desert.
Happy Holidays everyone! :)
First guess would be something like Midway or some other atol in the Pacific.
The city itself screams France without the flag anyway.:P I've found it but I'll leave Sept some more sleuthing time.
I think it's a great picture with the castle on the edge of a cliff and the towers lining up behind it. The perspective makes it seem like the city is raised far higher above the surrounding lands...
Segovia it is, the town has quite some historic landmarks and is firmly on my list of places to visit.

Mariehamn, capital of the Åland islands.
It is indeed Blankenheim. A somewhat tough one, although I feel that it wasn't actually as tough as you made it out to be.:P
I think he simply collapsed on his keyboard after searching for hours.
The picture was taken by me on a daytrip on the 9th of october and the road is on the east of the town. I recognize that it is not easy to see but the town has a burg.
It is indeed in the Eifel...
Latitude-wise it is inbetween Limburg and Luxembourg and the source of a tributary of the Rhine is in the town.

Because I wanted to give others a chance and don't really like taking the turn immediately after my place has been guessed. But as no one else is taking a guess, Hermann castle and Ivangorod fortress...
It also popped up when I was trying to solve Muizer's...
Correct
Really, is it a recent one? I picked it solely because I saw Kufstein had a castle on my way back from Tirol last month.

Farmington, Maine on Chester Greenwood day, a day in honour of the inventor of earmuffs.
Sorry Sept, I saw an image last week or so where I thought "that's a good location to use" but I can't for the life of me remember what it actually was so I got a bit stuck.:D
I know this one,...
