"Nil" is another term for "zero".
I regularly get family members who live into the late 70s, with no effort on my part whatsoever. I keep them in cities until they're about 22-24, then send them on campaigns. If they're mediocre...
Here's my tip: When fighting rebels, you hardly ever need more than 3 standard cavalry.
Tease and feint and charge them to make them reposition and chase you. I usually do this in a "diamond"...
The introduction videos of each of the Roman factions in vanilla already hint at existing disputes.
"Many Scipii have been put down by foreign swords... and a few Roman ones..."

Er.. why is my rep nil? :P

Select everyone you want to move, then hold ALT and right-click where you want them to go. ALT makes them keep their orientation, so they're square and straight even if you don't click exactly in the...
Because I don't like to micromanage my family, I get lots of crazy/drunk/extravagant family members. I use them to run around squashing rebels and building watchtowers.
I even have one whose name...
Actually, war pigs ("incendiary pigs") were really used to combat elephants. I don't know why so many "realistic" mods remove them.
-Glee
RTR elephants are harder to spook but more vulnerable than vanilla? I thought RTR stood for "Rome Total Realism"?
Apologies for the OT, but: "Seen the Elephant" is a great idea for a trait!
And how the bleeding heck did you have a general with 10 command stars before his first battle? Let's see what I can...
I quite liked your eulogy to Lucius the Philosopher, crow =) I'm afraid I'll have to steal your format to showcase some of my dearest generals. In fact, I have a little mini-dynasty right now in my...
At the risk of rambling...
Whenever I change formations, I have all my units run -- this cuts down on the enemy's time to react. While he's adjusting, I'll rush forward, make a few units nervous...
If frogs had wings, they wouldn't bump their asses when they hop.
It was made of pink Indiana granite. Yes, it was the "Pink House".
You're welcome ;)
That is a risk, true. But I always try to have at least 2 ranged units, which either take a chunk out of him, or force him to come to me and fight on my terms... or ideally both.

Actually, it should be "in store", as in "look what we have waiting and ready in stor(ag)e for you". But I digress.

I've thought that it would be nice to have a "general charge" or "engage at will" button for the whole army, as it would be a) simpler, and b) just like what would happen in a real battle when the...
I don't know of a way to disable it, but I always build up my cities enough that I can sally forth and just assemble outside by a tower. The tower's archery fire usually tips the balance in my...
Very lovely trailer! I hope to try this mod once I've exhausted vanilla RTW.
However, it was so good that a few points keep it frustratingly away from "fantastic" status, IMHO.
If I can be...
IMHO, the only reason cav seems overpowering in vanilla RTW is that some moron at The Creative Assembly thought that it's CHEAPER to purchase and maintain a horse and a human being, than a human...
And look at a WWII infantryman -- he doesn't have ANY shield. He'd definitely lose against a hoplite.

Some good answers here. Miscellaneous replies below:
Guilty, heheh. I enjoy the rumcajsz map for RTW Vanilla. I can't find the bloody thing online now, but I have it downloaded on my home...
I see a lot of you talking about Shogun, or Warcraft, or Civ... but is anyone here old enough to have played Ancient Art of War? ;)
That was a hell of a game when it came out.. 64 000 pixels of...
Methinks the lady doth protest too much.

I agree completely. Although I think that the way EB deals with this is very effective.[/quote]
How does EB deal with it? What I might recommend, from a structural point of view, is that existing...
I find that unless I deploy the pigs perfectly, and time the advance just right, Dumbo sees the pigs coming and pulls back for another run -- or just changes course and ravages an un-pigged section...
I hate that, and I also hate how the only units that seem to get experience in a battle (missiles excepting) are the ones that suffer a bunch of casualties.
-Glee
Good job! Couldn't you have broken it down into 2 guides though?
I also strongly recommend GIMP. It's open source software, which gives it a whole slew of benefits. Anyways, find it here:

I seldom change my bridge defense, even without phalanges. In that case, I'll often put a line of skirmishers behind the infantry line, with archers behind them.
-Glee
That does look like a nice formation -- I've never played the Greeks, but from playing against them I've noticed that they're great at covering frontage with their phalanges. What unit depth would...
I love defending in bridge battles =) Here's the formation I use:
.............ENEMY
................\ /

................|| <-- bridge

When using pila-throwing units, put them in loose formation. This will reduce the number of men stepped on during the elephant charge.
I'm wondering the same thing. I've skimmed the whole thread and the only answer I've seen is is the the Julii position is easier. Is that really a good thing? A decent human player can wipe the map...
Fixed the fix.
In my campaigns, Egypt almost always smokes the Seleucids. But I've never heard of the Greeks going so strong! Funky.

In the military path, I always get "the Butcher" then "the Victor".
In the building path, I get "the Builder" then "the Engineer".
I sometimes get "the Cunning".
My current leader went "the...
Hahahaha.... I know what you mean ;)
1) Playing my favourite vanilla faction (Scipii), I was steamrolling east through Egypt with 5 full stacks. Every 2 or 3 turns, an Egyptian diplomat would...
For those of you with some computer know-how who aren't sure what image editing program to use,
The Gimp

When starting a war, I like to build up 3-5 full stacks (usually 3-4 balanced armies and one reserve with onagers and mixed-bag units), place each in its own trireme, and assault the entire front.

I seldom trust the AI paths -- I create a new formation block (right-click and drag) almost every time, and/or I double-check with the spacebar preview.
