Re: The Size of Persian Armies

How so? There's no way of quantifying the time period, or that the Persians overloaded the pontoon, or the rate of march etc. There's better ways to deduce the size of the Persian force.

Re: The Size of Persian Armies

Do any of these ridiculous calculations have any scholarly backup? If not, they're not really worth refuting, despite being outright wrong.
  3. Re: Did Caesar win the Battle of Pharsalus? Or did Pompey lose it?

Any more thoughts on this? Personally, I think Pompey did very well, almost as well as Caesar in fact.
  4. Re: The pontic campaign & the Battle of Zela (47 B.C.)

    That's me :D

Oda is probably wrong here in honesty. When Pompey launched his campaign against Mithridates after arriving in the east, Mithridates' army was reduced primarily to native archers and...

Re: The Size of Persian Armies

I agree that Lord Oda may have been incorrect in assuming that the best army would have been at Issos, due to access of recruits from crucial recruiting areas like Anatolia, but he is correct that...

    Re: Dale Unit re-Flavour

I think it would be a good idea to make Dale's roster considerably more mercenary. Dale could in some ways represent the state of Carthage: it would not levy citizen soldiers. Its economy is heavily...
  10. Re: Did Caesar win the Battle of Pharsalus? Or did Pompey lose it?

Although it's true that Caesar was a lot more popular in Italy due to his famous clemency, the fact is that Pompey was the official representative of the Senate, which was the government of Rome. If...
  11. Re: Did Caesar win the Battle of Pharsalus? Or did Pompey lose it?

Attacking Caesar's supply depots would force Caesar to march into the east and wreak havoc there, so it's essentially the same outcome as simply embarking and attacking multiple points in the west of...
  12. Re: Did Caesar win the Battle of Pharsalus? Or did Pompey lose it?

Pompey was supplied via the sea, notably Dyrrachium where the majority of his stores were. If you recall, during the siege of Dyrrachium according to Caesar Pompey had no trouble feeding his troops...
  13. Re: Did Caesar win the Battle of Pharsalus? Or did Pompey lose it?

Pompey wasn't really "drawn" into a decisive battle. He could have ignored Caesar if he wanted to - he chose to follow Caesar inland for his own reasons, not because he got drawn in and outmaneuvered...
  14. Re: Did Caesar win the Battle of Pharsalus? Or did Pompey lose it?

Arguing that Pompey was always going to lose doesn't make sense, especially considering the series of miraculous events in the Greek campaign that, if even one had gone wrong, would have spelt the...
  15. Re: Did Caesar win the Battle of Pharsalus? Or did Pompey lose it?

It's not really correct to call it a fourth reserve line; the force was placed on the flank behind the cavalry, and always had a dominant position in the battle from the start, hardly the use of a...
  16. Re: Did Caesar win the Battle of Pharsalus? Or did Pompey lose it?

I feel like I need to address the sort of "trope" or stereotype surrounding the events of the Pharsalus campaign and its preliminaries; there's a lot of docudrama's and documentaries that have...

Indeed, the only issue is the lack of descriptions of the Macedonian army during the reigns of Philip and to a lesser extent Alexander.

Sticky: Re: CHALLENGE THREAD -- Issue a challenge here

I feel like streching my ability to argue and persuade, I will ask anyone here to accept my challenge for the following topic: Caesar vs Pompey as generals.

I will take the position of Pompey.
  21. Re: The Commanders of Military History - a Compilation

I would disagree, and argue that Hannibal was a superior tactician to Scipio.

    Re: Greatest Roman generals

Looking at the context of the late republic only, I would list:

    Caesar
    Pompey
    Lucullus
    Metellus Pius
    Sertorius
    Cn. Pompeius Strabo
    Sulla
    Marius
