They use the same generals as the grand campaign. I will do a recheck to make sure, though.
Growth is a bonus given by buildings, regions, etc. You have to figure out what is causing it specifically.
No empire maintenance changes were implemented.
You just play the new campaigns on Normal. I have set their modifiers to be designed for those campaigns.

@MrTimbe haven't had any other reports of regular crashes
They get small bonuses but they get larger ones at higher imperiums in the mod. Difficulty level determines some of those bonuses also.
You can make a lot of cash later in the game from trade. It depends on how you want to specialize.
Barbarians can stay near their own cities, though, and not need a ship. Coastal raiding :)
