Guide to Getting Great Graphics in Medieval 2 (how to make EB2 look as good as possible)

Re: Guide to Getting Great Graphics in Medieval 2 (how to make EB2 look as good as possible)
Thanks for the tutorial HaHawk. Beautiful screens (particularly the second). EB2 is quite demanding, graphically, already. Do you have an idea, on average, of impact on FPS these tweaks have?

From my experience, the post processor has very little effect on FPS. The biggest hit is caused by rendering all units in 3D (setting unit quality to "highest") and playing on the "huge" unit size. As Medieval 2 is an older title, it does not make use of quadcore CPUs (even newer games have issues with this, actually). So the bottleneck isn't so much the GPU as it is the CPU.
My advice is to follow the video to get maximum visual quality, and then scale it back depending on your hardware, beginning with unit quality (set to "high" instead of "highest"). If the post processor is still causing a hit, then I would disable the more resource-intensive effects like DOF (depth of field) first. The other color correction settings, again in my own experience, have a negligible impact on FPS.

Re: Guide to Getting Great Graphics in Medieval 2 (how to make EB2 look as good as possible)
I just turn every graphic to medium. If I put anything higher than medium I get CTD's before 75% of the battles I try to fight. That's with a GTX 1070, 16GB RAM and all that good stuff (good modern gaming PC).
On medium I get no CTD's, maybe one random one every 20 hours of play.

Thanks for the guide! It really made the game more visually appealing. :thumbsup2

I'm the type that watches naughty movies for the plot.

Actually, it's "higher" and not "high" that is the setting directly below "highest". For whatever reason, setting "highest" in the in-game settings causes "higher" to be set in the config file.
Anyway, If "highest" causes too big a performance hit but you want the sprites to be drawn at a longer distance than the settings allow, then my script to increase the distance might be a good compromise.

Well, what else can I say? If I put the graphics on high the game crashes to desktop with an error message 3 out of every 4 battles I try to fight. On medium it doesn't. Better to play the game looking mediocre than not be able to play (or be forced to auto-resolve every battle).

This is very great I love this a lot I watched your vid in youtube too I liked it so much especially when I noticed the wardruna music in it and another thing I'm actualy working on a mod and I want to put this guide along with the mod as a an enhancer for it so you can consider yourself as a great help for us credits will be given ofc too so I'm demanding permission to do this

Re: Guide to Getting Great Graphics in Medieval 2 (how to make EB2 look as good as possible)
Thanks HaHawk. Would you be willing to post you PC specs? What kind of overclock, if any, do you aim for on the processor? Presently, I'm on a i7-4790k OC'd to 4.5GHZ, GTX 1080, and 16GB RAM. Do you think this would suffice, particuarly the processor over-clock?

Argh my apologies dude I was hoping you'd see my post before it was edited, I didn't mean to sound condescending sorry. I was talking about a "fix" to your ctd's but seeing how discussion is forbidden about it I can't really elaborate on it. All I'll give you is this link and it'll hopefully point you in the right direction. (note: not trying to get my post edited again, just clarifying with him. Sorry for the trouble:lime:

Re: Guide to Getting Great Graphics in Medieval 2 (how to make EB2 look as good as possible)
Just a heads up, I couldn't get that version of ReShade to work without issues (1.1 or whatever was recommended). I'd set it up but the colors would go all weird after ~20-30 seconds after changing any setting, even disabling most everything. Not sure what the particular issue was.
I have no trouble with the latest version downloaded from https://reshade.me/.
I'll post the settings that I set up last night when I get a chance in case it helps anyone else.

This would definitely help me. Would also be nice if OP gave us some settings with latest version also.
Anyways thanks for the info op, it definitely looks better. im using latest version, and its nothing like 1.1 so very different, and it does not look anywhere near as nice as your version.

I just turn on four shaders - Curves, FXAA, SMAA, and Vibrance. Maybe I could do more with other shaders, but these seem like a good balance of making the game look great without being cartoon-y or anything.

M2TW strikes again. Most of that ram is not being used, and most your CPU power is not being used (idk about GPU power). Hardcoded limits. I wish someone would hack some computer and just steal the M2 source code, honestly. So much could be done.

Re: Guide to Getting Great Graphics in Medieval 2 (how to make EB2 look as good as possible)
It is amazing tool. But I managed to break it. It was working great, but then I clicked on "Permanently push into aplication" buton and now my changes wont apply until I click it again. I tried to remove reshade and set it up again, but it is still broken. Is there a way to fix it?
Another problem I'm having is with depth of field. No matter what I do its getting workse and it doesnt look even close to presented pictures. Are there some presents for DoF ? Or at least some way to reset my saved changes? I changed so many values there randomly ... it is just blurry mess now.
Some pictures (default, 2 reshade)

Completely setting aside that that'd be illegal, I think at this point it's believed that the M2TW source code was lost.

I dont think a company like CA simply loses the source code of one of their games.. Also I doubt the changes they made to the exe when porting M2TW to steam would have been possible without the source code.
edit: perhaps they are keeping it incase they ever want to create a tablet/ipad app version of M2TW aswell :laughter:

Re: Guide to Getting Great Graphics in Medieval 2 (how to make EB2 look as good as possible)
I wish there was a written guide for this. I've always loathed watching a video with my slow internet in low resolution instead of being able to copy paste settings into files and simply download the required programs.
I don't suppose anyone would be willing to share their working files?
-
Re: Guide to Getting Great Graphics in Medieval 2 (how to make EB2 look as good as possible)
I dont have any files to share right now, but this is basic guide what you have to do :
1 Edit medieval.preference.cfg :
antialiasing = 0
anisotropic filtering = 0
bloom = 0
2 Create profile in ATI/NVIdiacontrol panel for kingdoms.exe and enable antialiasing and anisotropic filtering.
3 Dowload & Install Reshade. You have two options here:
A Download "Reshade Framework 1.1.0.7" https://www.mediafire.com/folder/8ar...#9ckrmgp4813fy
Extract, run Mediator and link it with kingdoms.exe on first window
Create custom profile or copy/paste one of profiles https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B87...ZFcGhiTzg/view
B Dowload newest Reshade 3.+ here https://reshade.me/
Complete writen guide here https://reshade.me/forum/general-dis...-for-newcomers
Idk about any profiles so you will have to create one.

Re: Guide to Getting Great Graphics in Medieval 2 (how to make EB2 look as good as possible)
Does it work with graphic cards other than NVidia? Specifically Intel?
-
Re: Guide to Getting Great Graphics in Medieval 2 (how to make EB2 look as good as possible)
As long it has some control panel where you can create profile for applications it doesnt matter. I had ATI card so I used AMD Catalyst Control Center, I know Nvidia has their own version and most of other manufacturers use those two I think.
If you dont disable AA and AF in application, some effect as depth of field wont work at all. And you can set better quality through today's graphic card as you can in 15 years old game.
Reshade has its own, more advanced bloom effects so you should disable that too.

Unfortunately, ReShade is not compatible with Mac and all my research to find equivalent apps were unsuccessful :(
We Mac users will probably never be allowed to play with a good gaming experience

Re: Guide to Getting Great Graphics in Medieval 2 (how to make EB2 look as good as possible)
That's odd. ReShade dont seens to work for me in Medieval 2. Neither the 1.1.0 or 3.0.8. With 1.1.0 I have 0xc0000005 error message when trying to start the game, with 3.0.8 I hit the exe and the game don't launch neither any error message appears. I tried ReShade in other games and it seens to work fine. The only diference from HaHawk game from mine I noticed from the video is that he is using Steam, I still use an old disk version. May be it?
-
Re: Guide to Getting Great Graphics in Medieval 2 (how to make EB2 look as good as possible)
Thank you very much for the video guide, HaHawk!
Unfortunately, ReShade 1.1.0 Framework doesn't work with M2TW in my laptop but it does in other games... As I'm not pacient enough to make my own ReShade 3+ preset and if you are in my same situation, I would definitely encourage you to use this magnificent GEMFX preset made by luyspaulo for GEMFX 1.0.9. Despite it was originally designed for Rome II Total War, it perfectly suits EBII and looks astonishing!!!
z3n was also impressed by this preset. Cheers!

Great suggestion, man! ReShade also didn't worked for me, but GEMFX did! Not sure wich is best, HaHawk preset or the z3n, but since I can just one of them that was a no brainer.
But let me ask you... WAY BETTER THAN WITHOUT but if there is a single thing that I didn't like in z3n preset is that it too much colorful but especially any white texture becomes to bright. To you know how I can tune it down a bit?

No worries, glad to share luyspaulo preset  I agree with both of you, white texture becomes too bright during loading screen and in campaign map for reading text descriptions. The map also looks a bit dark and I don't know how to tune it down without taking hours to understand the tweaking, so that's why I only use it for field battles (press F9 to activate or deactivate GEMFX).
For the moment, it's the best preset I've found. Feel free to share new ones that could also fit with EBII!

Re: Guide to Getting Great Graphics in Medieval 2 (how to make EB2 look as good as possible)
Disable Vibrance to tone down colors, with bright white there are more that one factor but most of it is from LiftGammaGain. You can disable it or tone it down.

YourMadDoc, could you please upload your modified GEM FX preset as in https://imgur.com/a/E0GHE and campaign map? I presume it's luyspaulo preset modified with your suggestions, but mine doesn't look as good as yours. Thanks in advance, cheers!

Re: Guide to Getting Great Graphics in Medieval 2 (how to make EB2 look as good as possible)
It is just shader for sharper colors, gaussian blur to cover those 2d sprites a bit and Davinci. Very light, I have like 3 fps loss. I also have Crimson tide blood submod .

In case you're still interested, I finally managed to fix the blinding white issue!!! I also slightly decrease the saturation and it finally looks gorgeous in the campaign and battle maps. It's adjusted for my laptop, so you may need to tweak it a bit.
Took me longer than expected, it was more tricky than I had initially thought... but finally, here is attached luyspaulo's GEMFX 1.0.9 preset modified and adapted to Europa Barbarorum II (and presumably, Medieval II Total War mods). It is also very lightweight for FPS in my case. Please, feel free to share your modifications! Cheers

P.S: YourMadDoc, thank you again for your modified preset. Unfortunately, Gaussian filter decreases my fps quite a bit... It looks very nice as well, but I kind of like more the contrast of the shadows and lighting in the one attached above.
-
Re: Guide to Getting Great Graphics in Medieval 2 (how to make EB2 look as good as possible)
Nice present. Strange that gaussian have so much fps hit for you. I have minimal fps hit no matter what effect I pick. However I had one present, idk which effects I had enabled and my fps on campaign map went down to 5 and it was unplayable, yet in battle, I had no problems. I think it might be due to m2tw settings, gemx effects, and graphic card settings eating up all performance under certain combinations.

Thanks! I have uploaded 3 presets which I found reasonable. The first version looks darker so, in principle, the final version is more "bright" while keeping the consistency. However, it's not perfect and some environments could still look a bit dark. Anyone, feel free to improve it, but it's a very tricky and time consuming process. I'm quite happy with the results as it's my first post-processing tweaking experience
It's very strange... I have a decent laptop with dGPU but Gaussian filter noticeably hits my FPS. AmbienteLight and its related effects decrease very few FPS, but it's definitely worth the loss for dynamic lighting. Apart from that, I deactivated GEMFX FXAA (FPS loss) and use in-game 8x anti-aliasing and Lumasharpen without any loss... Makes no sense to me either, it could be what you refered.
EDIT: I removed prior versions for the sake of simplicity. Let me know if someone wants to try them in case they might look better in their PCs.

Having so many effects may cause problems with too dark or too colorfull image in certain time of a day.Replacing gemfx fxaa with lumasharpen was a good call. Soldiers looks as sharp and detailed as they can be

Re: Guide to Getting Great Graphics in Medieval 2 (how to make EB2 look as good as possible)
Great preset as well. Lumasharpen brings M2TW engine back to life! I used Macedonian UI as a test basis for determining white level, as it can become too bright.
Overall, it seems quite complicated to get a preset which perfectly fits into all environments/day time variables.

Re: Guide to Getting Great Graphics in Medieval 2 (how to make EB2 look as good as possible)
this is a bit off topic but I suppose you guys are using these postfx utilities for other TW games as well? If so anyone knows how to get proper Anti-aliasing ingame without using that simple postprocessing FXAA thing toggle on/off that only makes all things muddy and you still have pretty visible jagged lines ?
Tried to force it through my 3d settings in Nvidia CP with both Enhance and Override application settings mode. I also use DSR but no avail.
Saw this old post for using a postprocessing utility
https://forums.totalwar.com/discussi...erformance-hit but I but I don't know how actual is it.
Are there more proper ways of doing this without affecting the performance too much. I only want antialising and no other graphic enhancements/filters. What are you guys using?

If you are playing in windowed mode, forcing anti-aliasing within nVIDIA Control Panel doesn't work. If you're playing fullscreen, are you using an Optimus laptop? This really helped in my case. Nevermind if V-Sync not working isn't your symptom, but if you're playing in fullscreen and unsuccessfully forcing AA in nVIDIA CP, it could be iGPU/dGPU (Optimus) conflict.
If none of the above is your problem, try to force AA in-game and use GEMFX Lumasharpen filter (SweetFX) configuration. You can copy Lumasharpen configuration from our modded GEMFX profiles. Cheers

Disabled windowed mode but doesn't seem to have any effect. Tried with both in game antialiasing on and off.
How to get that thing for Rome 2? The ingame AA though doesn't do any noticeable job. The jagged lines remain while the other textures just get muddy and blurry. Still recommend that?
-
Re: Guide to Getting Great Graphics in Medieval 2 (how to make EB2 look as good as possible)
That picture looks like there is no AA applied at all. I haven't played that game but it looks like something went wrong. Does it have to look like that? If not you could revert to default and disable all postprocessing and overrides on a graphic card. Then start over.
-
Re: Guide to Getting Great Graphics in Medieval 2 (how to make EB2 look as good as possible)
well there were complaints about that far back in 2013. Everyone hoped there will be true AA in the game but never happened.
The ingame AA is that cheap FXAA which doesn't seem to have any kind of effect on textures that actually need it like units spears and sarisas. Instead the rest of the textures become pretty much unsharped.

And it's gorgeous! I swear even the campaign map looks better now.
Thank you very much! Glad to share it.
It took me several hours and different versions during some days (no previous experience) to reach the final one... I can't even imagine how many times I have pressed F9 to compare the colours in order to keep EBII design essence :laughter:

Hey Jd, i'd like to use your preset as the white was too bright for me in his original as well, but when I load yours up a get like a totally black inverted image essentially, might be a setting you changed that works with M2TW but not Rome2. What was the main setting you used to tone down the white in menus/UI, so I can do it manually. Thanks!

My game (both mod and vanilla) doesn't start after I try to use this.

What was the main setting you used to tone down the white in menus/UI, so I can do it manually. Thanks!
It's specifically adapted for EBII, so it might not look as good in other games/mods (even M2TW). Do you mean that you want to use it for Rome II TW?
At the end, I had to change many SweetFX settings, not just one specifically. The tricky thing is that as soon as you tweak one (e.g. LiftGammaGain) for toning down the white, other colours don't look good anymore, so you need to tweak other settings and so on... Could you upload some pictures so I can see how it looks? Don't have R2TW installed right now, don't even have enough time to play EBII at the moment, unfortunately.

I don't have any idea why newest ReShade version doesn't work on your PC. Did you try HaHawk's presets through ReShade Framework 1.1.0, or our presets through GEMFX 1.0.9? In fact, ReShade Framework 1.1.0 doesn't work in my laptop with M2TW.

At first I tried that version in the tutorial which didn't work. Then I tried latest version which didn't work either.

Just in case, did you select Direct3D 9 as binary for M2TW/Kingdoms.exe? I managed to make Reshade 3.1.0 work with EBII, so no clue...
Try GEMFX 1.0.9 then and see if you like our presets. Anyway, looking forward to new and/or improved presets!

Yes.
I can try GEMFX after I fix extremely long turn times problem.

After I unchecked Windows 7 compatibility in the medieval2.exe and problem is gone. It is working now.

Cheers
EDIT: Some quick pics:

P.S: YourMadDoc, thank you again for your modified preset. Unfortunately, Gaussian filter decreases my fps quite a bit... It looks very nice as well, but I kind of like more the contrast of the shadows and lighting in the one attached above.
Out of curiosity, what did the trick? I have similar blinding white light issues in a lot of presets I've tinkered with.

Well, as previously mentioned, it's quite tricky to get the right balance at the end. The first one I tried, and probably the most impactful, was LiftGammaGain: raising LiftX,Y,Z and decreasing GainX,Y,Z. As soon as blinding white was decreasing, the colour balance started to get off. Hence, you will need to tweak the already used colour filters within the preset or activate some (e.g. DPX, Technicolor, Curves, Tonemap, etc), tweak it/them while in-game in order to properly appreciate the changes and further understand what the filter is actually doing (make changes, save profile, constant F9 ON-OFF cycle...). Warning: Some of these filters can provoke the undesired returning of blinding white, so make small variations that you can remember and make backups as soon as you have successfully progressed!!!
What I can't advice is which ones to use for a specific demand, as I started to tweak for the first time from an already created GEMFX preset that I used as a base. What looks good in EBII might not fit other games and so on... Good luck and share your results!

Could somebody please aswell show some pictures from the Strategy Map with GEM FX?

Re: Guide to Getting Great Graphics in Medieval 2 (how to make EB2 look as good as possible)
I do not seem to be able to get this working as intended in game. Everything loads and I get the sweetFX loading messages as the game starts, but during battles I seem unable to change the options using mediator. I change presets, or fiddle with options but nothing happens in game. Any idea what I could be doing wrong?
I also used the recommended options and settings from the video, but have been getting massive slowdowns during siege battles particularly. To the point where the game slows to a crawl.

Can't test it now (RL busy times), but if you're using my final version from #46 in a fresh GEMFX 1.0.9 installation, you shouldn't be getting any sort of blinding white. That was the aim of my preset adaptation from luyspaulo one (blinding white issue in EBII), but at the end I ended up tweaking some colour balancing in order to fit EBII design.
I am very happy with the results in my laptop (first time experience, any enhancement from other users is very welcome!), but your monitor might have different colours gamma and calibration. If you have accidentally tweaked any setting, despite a small change, it can dramatically affect the final display, like the return of blinding white. Could you upload some pictures?

Re: Guide to Getting Great Graphics in Medieval 2 (how to make EB2 look as good as possible)
This tool may indeed yield unbelievable results. I'm astonished.
On my good, old Sony Vaio, Intel Core i5 M480 2.67GHz, 6GB RAM, AMD Radeon HD 5000, 1024 MB, with the screen resolution 1366 x 768, it can actually get as good as that;
Admittedly, I had to tweak some of the graphical settings down to medium, including unit_detail, nevertheless with some of those reshade-filters applied it still looks spectacular.
Thank you HaHawk for the guide. It's been very useful!

Hey jdofo, your preset works with GemFX but not reshade right? Sorry I'm still very new at this.

Yes, it's a preset for GEMFX 1.0.9. #46
I heard that there might be better performance through ReShade, so I might adapt this preset in the future when I find some time. Enjoy it!

Re: Guide to Getting Great Graphics in Medieval 2 (how to make EB2 look as good as possible)
I've had some problems getting Reshade to work, I have followed the instructions in the video to the letter 3 times, and each time I complete the steps the game fails to start, the only way to get the game running again is a clean install, which also means I have to go through the hassle of reinstalling this great mod. Has anyone else encountered problems like this? where the game and mod is working fine, but attempted Reshade installation breaks the game. I wish I could remember the error message, as I'm sure that would be helpful.

It sounds like there's something wrong with your configuration file (medieval2.preference.cfg) rather than reshade, since reshade does not alter any game files. Did you copy/paste the CFG from the video description? If so, perhaps your resolution is incorrect or something similar. There will never be a reason to have to re-install the game as a result of reshade (which is just a few files put into the M2TW directory — they can be deleted manually in a few seconds). Good luck!

Thanks for the reply, I copied manually as I was unsure about the fact that I had some items in my list that were absent in yours and vice versa, so I identified the ones that were present in both but had different values and changed those, the mod is running perfectly, however whenever I attempt to implement ReShade that's when the problems occur. I may give it one last go, but will finish my current campaign first.

Re: Guide to Getting Great Graphics in Medieval 2 (how to make EB2 look as good as possible)
I believe that with external graphics programms each mod loses its identity.
Explain. Each modding team desides what kind of essense their creation will make. That includes the style of texturing, the style of models , the enviroment , minor mods like better sky or water etc.
By changing that essense you no longer play that mod.
Back in years what JMRC (this mod's animator) helped me in an animation I offered him my total collection of Marka fixed horses in the shapes his team would desire as a move of gratidute.
He explained that his mod would keep their horses because they fit 100% to the style of the units they mount them and MARKA horses would look alien to the mod.
In this link you can see the diference in style (not better not worse-just diferent style) of our mod to this wonderfull one! The images are snapshots without any changes from te battle field.
My humble sugestion is to play EACH mod with its UNIQUE essense it offers to us all. Feel what its creators wanted you to feel playing it. That includes minimods unit additions.
PLEASE do not use other mods units as addition to this mod or another. The diferenece of styles will ruin the easthetics.
Play this mod as is...Enjoy it...learn from it and its creators years of hard work.

Well, I agree on the essence of the message, but I have to disagree in the generalisation and exaggeration.
EBII on my high-end laptop (emphasising it is not a  potato, only that) doesn't look near as good as the EBII twitter unit previews pictures. On the contrary, I have this fake oversaturated and artificial colours/contrast/lighting from original M2TW, and that really kills all the hard work accomplished by EBII team. I have already asked them what do they use in order to get that quality but didn't get any reply. So I felt oblied to tweak an external graphics program (GEMFX profile #46) for the first time, in order to fully enjoy EBII as it deserves. It took me many hours/days to enhance the graphics while keeping EBII design essence, and I humbly believe that it is a good compromise for other people that might have felt the same. You will still play EBII, do not dramatise.
The conclusion is that it depends on the hardware/software everyone has in order to play it (e.g. screen calibrations and personal preference, of course). I agree that there are many presets for games which over do it and I dislike them as well, but that doesn't mean that using an external graphical injector is killing the work made by splendid modders if done right (quite the opposite, it can bring back an engine to its glory days). Trust me, it is very tricky and challenging, even a decimal variation within a parameter among tons of them can make a whole difference for better or worse. Without these tweaks, I could barely enjoy EBII as I enjoy it now, so let people decide what they need, as they can even disagree with some decisions. That's the beauty of mods, submods and so on, no one is forcing you to use them but there is always another step for creativity. In fact, even sometimes submods become better than the original mod (becoming another mod in itself), so just play as you prefer and let others play as they want too. Cheers!

Re: Guide to Getting Great Graphics in Medieval 2 (how to make EB2 look as good as possible)
All sing praises to HaHawk for this awesome tutorial. After years of away from older TW games like RTW & MTW II I recently reinstalled them and revisited TWCenter for mods and stuff. I started playing Stainless Steel and thought to myself - "This is so much better than I remembered, if only there would be a way to enhance the graphics somehow.." - then I found this thread.
I have a few questions though, regarding the ReShade versions. I found your MediaFire download links and noticed the instructions on the video to download the ReShade Framework 1.1.0.Zz to use with your presets, however in the parent directory there's also ReShade with SweetFX 2.0.Zz?
In addition regarding ReShade 3.xx, does it have significant improvements over Reshade 1.1.0? Can your presets be imported to be used with the ReShade 3.xx version?

Just posting to say thank you for this HaHawk, this has added so much to my enjoyment of battles, and even my campaign map.

Re: Guide to Getting Great Graphics in Medieval 2 (how to make EB2 look as good as possible)
Does anyone else get random laggy battles? I've played with over 4k troops flawlessly but sometimes just a 1k stack lags like hell, really weird. Figured it was the reflections on water in one situation, disabled that and it worked but i encountered the problem again later, im really confused.... (sorry for posting this here, idk where else to do it)

It happens to me at Pharos battlemap.

As far as I know, all of the newer versions work with M2TW, but I made the video a while back with presets I'd already created and fine-tuned in the previous version. The newer versions of ReShade have a different GUI and, unfortunately, are not compatible with older presets. However, you can still use a newer version and create your own presets. I believe the latest version offers slightly enhanced performance, so it's worth experimenting with (nothing crazy, but perhaps a 5-10% gain in FPS performance).

Great, glad to hear it. That's the whole point! After a few months I realized more people needed to see how, even after all these years, this game still has some tricks up its sleeve!

Re: Guide to Getting Great Graphics in Medieval 2 (how to make EB2 look as good as possible)
Are there any other instructions for using Reshade? Particularly the version you demonstrated and the use of your Presets? I'm trying to avoid spending too much of my gaming time trying to puzzle out how to use the program on my own.

Re: Guide to Getting Great Graphics in Medieval 2 (how to make EB2 look as good as possible)
Trying to get a better laptop for Christmas to have a smoother gaming performance, since the HP Pavilion one I have is crap, only has 2.6 GHZ processor, 6 GB of RAM, and HD Family Graphics card. Eww, gross! I realize laptops in general aren't ideal for gaming and a desktop is always the better solution, but I need to get a laptop, non-negotiable. I'm looking at an Acer Aspire 5 Slim with 8 GB of RAM, a 3.9 GHZ Core i5 processor, a 2 GB NVIDIA GeForce MX250 graphics card, but has only 512 GB of flash memory storage space (current computer has over 750 GB). I'm only using up like 415 GB or so of my current hard drive, though, and I have a 1 TB external hard drive that I could move stuff onto (doing that anyway with backups of everything).
What do you guys think? I'm trying to keep it within a reasonable price range, below $1000 now that it's cyber Monday on Amazon, so I can get pretty good deals on stuff. Current Acer Aspire Laptop I'm talking about is $590, knocked down from $649.

You'd probably get more opinions if you post here.

Re: Guide to Getting Great Graphics in Medieval 2 (how to make EB2 look as good as possible)
After failing to get the HaHawk stuff to work I tried the GEMFX stuff but that stops the steam EB launcher from working.
Edit: BE WARNED. I don't know what happened but somehow GEMFX 1.0.9 broke my installation. Had to reinstall everything.
4 hours and two complete reinstalls later. I give up.

I don't use Steam so I cannot tell, but if you installed GEMFX, you only need to be a little attentive and simply manually delete the files that have been installed/copied by GEMFX into your M2TW folder... and voilá, your game works again!
GEMFX, ReShade or similar won't break your game installations as these only add files that can be deleted if not working for your computer/game for some reason (it sometimes happens), but no original files of the games are modified, thus no game installation gets broken, from my experience.

GemFX has no uninstaller (I think) and when EB wouldn't start, I tried to find all the files GEMFX install but not all are apparently called GEMFXsomething. Reshade was less of a problem. I don't know what GEMFX does but 1.0.9 and 2.2 both blocked the EB steam launcher.

It's been a few years since I checked this... Yes, it's also possible that GEMFX doesn't use the same naming consistency as ReShade, so it's harder to find the files.
However, if I correctly recall, you can extract GEMFX files (installer) to a random folder (e.g. New folder within Desktop) to see what files does GEMFX add into a game folder. Thus, you know how many files and which ones specifically you have to remove within the game folder based on their name. This worked for me previous times and never had to reinstall any game.
I cannot say about Steam, I stay away from such "business model" as much as possible...
