"Fingerprints" of milk of ruminants found in ceramic baby bottles from Bronze Age and Iron Age child graves in Bavaria

A new study has found lipid "fingerprints" of the major fatty acids of residues from three small, spouted vessels that were found in Bronze Age and Iron Age graves of infants in Bavaria. The results suggest that the vessels were used to feed infants with the milk from ruminants.

As similar vessels were found in graves from neolithic period, it could explain, why livestock breeders, like the corded ware culture, were so successful in Europe.

Even little changes in child mortality give a big advantage against the older neolithic farmer cultures in Europe.
